It’s crazy to look back and think that just over a year and a half ago I was going through one of the darkest times in my life. From where I was at in life then compared to where I am at now, it’s like I am a whole new person. Never in my life have I been as happy as I am today, never have I laughed more than I do now, and never have I loved life this much.
It’s cliche to think about (trust me, I know), but a lot of my happiness has come from the fact that I have learned to take life one day at a time, and because decided to focus on my mental well-being.
Finding Happiness In Life
The simple truth is that your thoughts create your reality. If you don’t think positively about yourself and the world in which you live in, there is going to be very little that will ever be enjoyable in your life.
How do I know? Because this was my life… for many consecutive years.
I look back now and realize how negative of a person I truly was. From lashing out at others, to beating myself up for every single mistake that I made, to never being grateful for the life that I was living. The vast majority of my thoughts were negative ones, and guess what… my life followed suit.
Words are incredibly powerful. You know that saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Yeah, that saying is a crock of you-know-what.
Sure, sticks and stones may break your bones, but broken bones will always heal. Words, on the other hand, you won’t always heal from words… especially if you are not in the right state of mind.
I would think to myself that I wasn’t deserving of living a life of happiness, that I didn’t have what was required of me to achieve my goals, that I was dumb, that I was fat, that I was incapable of achieving anything worth achieving.
When I thought this way, my reality followed. I started playing life overly safe because I was too scared to take a chance on myself and wasn’t strong enough to overcome failure. I started pushing my friends away from me because I didn’t want them to see the pain and struggle that I was enduring. I stuck to the same exact routine because it was working and I wasn’t willing to risk what wasn’t broken.
Needless to say, my reality was an exact reflection of my thoughts. Nothing new and exciting was ever happening, I wasn’t creating any lifelong memories, and worst of all, I absolutely despised the person that I was becoming.
How To Create Change
It wasn’t until I started focusing on my mental well-being that I actually started to find some level of happiness and self-confidence in my life.
At first, it sounded like the dumbest idea ever. I remember reading these “self-help” blogs telling me to use positive affirmations, to focus on positive outcomes, and to believe in myself.
Yeah, like my life was going to get better just like that.
In reflecting over the last year and a half, though, my life has gotten better just like that. It wasn’t immediate and there have been some difficult times along the way, but from my own personal experience, my life has changed as drastically as it has because I decided to focus on improving my mindset.
Look, I know it sounds super cheesy and corny to think about, but life isn’t as complicated as we sometimes make it out to be. While we like to think that there is always some outside factor that is preventing us from living the life in which we desire, the truth is that we control the very life in which we live. Whether we think we can or we can’t, we’re right.
Once I realized this, that is really when my life started to change. The negative self-talk slowly started turning into positive affirmations, and little by little, my life started to improve. Over the course of a year and a half, that change has been monumental and it’s a change that I am incredibly grateful for.
What I’m trying to get at, is that we all need to start focusing on the good in life. Whether or not there is more good in our lives than bad or more bad in our lives than good, it makes no sense to focus on anything else but what makes us happy.
The reality of it is that your thoughts create your reality. Even if there is little good in your life, the more that you focus on it, the more that good things will start to come your way. So start focusing on the good, and allow your thoughts to create your reality.
