Have you ever wondered what happens when you are kind to others or how your life can change simply through being a kinder person?
Well, today’s act of kindness didn’t come from me. It came from somebody whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with, but it was directed at me. Just some proof that when you are kind to others, others will show kindness towards you.
Dealing with rejection
The last few weeks have been a little stressful for me. Maybe it’s the fact that I hate sitting still so I try to do too much with the time that I have, or maybe it’s because I know what I am capable of achieving, and therefore, put too much pressure on myself to actually achieve the things that I want to achieve.
Along with all that I am trying to achieve on a personal level, I also decided that I wanted to continue to grow on a professional level as well. The time had come for me to test the waters and look for a new job.
Over the last six months, I have been rejected more times than I can count. Well, actually, I wasn’t rejected. I really wasn’t given a chance.
Mainly all of the jobs that I applied for were internal with the company that I currently work for, and after thinking that I’d be a good fit for the new position, I was either told that they had hired somebody else, I wasn’t qualified for the position, or that they decided to can the position entirely.
Never give up
My motivation was low, but it was not yet extinct.
I always knew that I wanted to work with others and help to motivate them and inspire them, and I think I finally found that job.
After applying to the position, I was fortunate to be told that I had made it to the interview stage. First, it was a phone interview with the Human Resources department. After deeming that I would be a good fit, I met with three hiring managers from different departments within the company.
Once I received word that my application had been accepted and that I had made it into the interview process, all of my hope and excitement was restored. I was so excited that I told one of my co-workers that I had received an interview invitation. This gentleman has always been a mentor to me, so he was just as excited as I was when I told him the good news.
What happens when you are kind to others?
Fast forward a week or so, and the day had come to interview for the position. I wasn’t working until later in the day, so it worked out perfectly. I would interview in the morning, and go to work later in the day.
Before I left my house to go to the interview, I decided to take a glance at my work email. In there was an unread message from the gentleman who I had told about the position. It said, “It’s a big day for you man! Just wanted to wish you the best of luck and fingers crossed!”
As I read that, my face immediately lit up. I was incredibly nervous about the interview, and this email was exactly what I needed to help relieve some of the stress and worry that I was feeling.
The part that amazed me the most was the fact that my coworker had remembered. Not only did he wish me luck in interviewing for the position, but he also did so on the day that I was going to be interviewing.
Benefits of being kind to others
All-in-all, it made me feel good that somebody outside of my family had taken the time to reach out to me and provided me with an extra boost of encouragement. And while he may not think anything of it, it gave me the boost that I needed to go into the interview with a tremendous amount of confidence.
This is a perfect example of the message that I am trying to portray through doing this challenge. You don’t need to be a superhero to change the world. You just need to be kind to others and show them that you care.
Even by doing something as “small” as wishing others good luck on a big day, holding the door open for a stranger, or going up to someone and giving them a compliment can help to drastically improve their day.
But if you aren’t willing to act from the kindness of your heart, then you are never going to know how you could have improved somebody’s day or helped to change the world.
So the point is, act with kindness. Do something for somebody else that you feel will help to uplift their day. The more you uplift others, the greater the impact they have on lives around them as well.
