Ways to Build Self-Discipline
One of the hardest challenges that we all face in life is following through on the goals that we set for ourselves. Take that New Year’s resolution for example. How long did it take before it came a distant thought? Maybe a month if we were lucky? Let’s be real with ourselves, it probably didn’t last more than a week or two. Why? Because we lack self-discipline. Well, not anymore. Here are 5 ways to build self-discipline so that you can commit to and achieve your dreams.
Whether we are wanting to get healthier, start our own business, or just be a happier person in life, we are not going to succeed if we are not disciplined. Everyone can all talk the talk, but it can’t just stop there. We need to do more. We need to be willing to walk the walk. Prove to yourself that your actions are stronger than your words, and stay committed to what matters most to you in life.
5 Ways To Build Self-Discipline
Believe in yourself
No matter what it is that you are wanting to do in your life, you first need to believe in yourself. You need to believe that you are capable of achieving your dreams, and know that you have every opportunity to succeed. The only thing that can stop you are the excuses that you are allowing yourself to create. Once you eliminate the excuses and truly believe in your abilities, nothing can get in the way of you and your dreams.
If you don’t believe in yourself, well then you will never achieve happiness or success. You need to realize that whatever it is that you are chasing, YOU are the only one that can pursue it. Everyone else has their own lives to worry about, and you have yours. So focus on what matters to you, and believe. Believe in yourself, and enjoy the pursuit of achieving your own destiny.
I have talked about this before, but your mornings will directly impact the rest of your day. Instead of getting sucked into everyone else’s agendas, take some time for yourself and focus on what you want to get done. When you do it right away in the morning, you are much more likely to stay committed.
Compare yourself to a battery. You have one full charge a day. Getting up and working all day takes 75% of your daily battery, cooking and chores take another 15%. At the end of the day, you only have 10% left. Not only are you not going to be motivated or focused on what you need to get done, but you are probably going to find some pointless thing to waste that extra energy on. Trust me, watching Netflix is not more important than focusing on your dreams.
Now, if you take that extra energy and move it to the morning, you are more likely to follow through on your commitment because you are not running on empty. Not only that, but you are going to be more focused on what needs to be done, and you are will be setting the pace for the rest of your day.
Commit to your goals & work like there is no tomorrow
Enough of the excuses. If you want to achieve your dreams in life, don’t just talk about it, actually do it. Get up everyday at 5am. Go to bed at 1am. Whatever it takes to achieve your dreams, ask yourself if you are willing to put in the effort. Don’t let yours dreams be some New Year’s resolution that you are going to forget about in a few weeks. Know what you want with your life, and commit to it.
Focus on both the little and big picture
Nothing in life is going to come easy, and nothing that comes easy is worth having. When looking for ways to build self-discipline, try to focus on both short term and long term goals. Understand that the long term goal is going to take years to achieve, so stay motivated by achieving short term goals that are leading to a bigger one. It is going to be a constant grind, but embrace the challenge and grow as a person.
Your life is not going to change overnight. No matter how badly you want to achieve your dreams, you need to be consistent. Consistency is a great way to build self-discipline. By establishing both short and long term goal, you are laying the foundation to your tower of success. Yes, there are some things that you can do to create a better tomorrow, but instead of focusing on tomorrow, focus on the bigger picture. Focus on having a plan that creates a better, long lasting future.
Forgive and forget
Obstacles are part of success. No matter how hard you try, you will never be perfect. Instead of trying to be perfect, focus on being the best that you can be. Learn from your mistakes, grow from them, and move on. Spending your time and energy focusing on what has already happened is only wasting the time and energy you could be spending on the present. You are never going to be able to change the past, so why bother trying. Forgive yourself of your mistakes, and forget them.
There are other ways than just these 5 ways to build self-discipline, but I personally believe that these are the most important. Forgive your past, love your life, commit to your goals in life, and just focus on you. Follow all of your wildest dreams in life, and never stop believing in yourself. You can do whatever you desire in life, all you need to do is to work hard, and to believe.
