When we are born, we come into this world knowing nothing but what we are taught. We start out as rebellious little hellions not listening to or accepting anything that doesn’t fit our wants and our desires. But as time progresses and as we age, so too does our mentality.
Very rarely do we do anything our of pure joy or pleasure any longer. Instead, we allow others to shape who we as individuals and what we do with our lives. We slowly start to adopt the beliefs, the fears, and the limitations of others until these very beliefs, fears, and limitations consume our very life.
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” ~Albert Einstein
Not to say that I am smarter than Einstein or anything, but he was only partially right. There are only two ways to live your life. But it’s not necessarily as though everything is a miracle or nothing is a miracle. The only two ways to live your life are to either live life for the approval of others, or to live life for the approval of yourself.
Living for the Approval of Others
This is where 99.9% of us lay.
Notice how I say “us?” That’s because I live this way as well. Even if it is only partially living for the approval of others, anytime that you conform your life for the acceptance or approval of somebody else, you are living by their rules instead of your own.
Take a moment to reflect on your daily habits. How often do you get up in the morning and get dressed with the hope that somebody will complement the way you look? You want to look nice, right? But who do you want to look nice for? Are you trying to look nice for yourself, or are you trying to look nice for others or to simply fit in?
How about when you go out to eat? When you order food, do you allow the thought of others to determine what it is that you order? Perhaps you get a salad because you are trying to shed a few pounds. But who are you trying to lose a few pounds for? Do you want to lose weight to look better in the eyes of others, or do you want to lose weight to look better for yourself?
There have been many, many times in my life (there still are) where I have found myself changing my desires for something less pleasurable just for the sake of fitting in or trying to seek the approval of others. From the way I look, how I eat, to the activities that I do, I have adopted the beliefs of others and have allowed these very beliefs to shape who I am today.
Living for the Approval of Yourself
The second way of living is to live for the approval of yourself. The individuals who are living this way are the ones who are experiencing all that this life has to offer. They are the ones who are out there taking risks on themselves, who are giving themselves the best opportunity to succeed in life, and who don’t let the fear of others prohibit them from experiencing all of the beauty that this world has to offer.
It’s not to say that they don’t care about others or the world around them, they just aren’t going to get caught up in the lives of others and aren’t going to allow the beliefs of others to impact what they do in life.
They aren’t worried about how others think of the way they dress, the goals that they chase, or what they do with their lives. The only thing that they are worried about is living their life to the absolute fullest each and every day and enjoying every moment of it.
To the 0.1% of you out there that are living life on your own terms, doing everything it is that you want to be doing, and making the most out of your very life, just know that I am slightly envious of you. Okay, not slightly… incredibly.
It’s not like I want to live your life or do the things that you do. I am envious of the fact that you live your life without letting the outside world shape who you are. By doing what it is that you want, you are truly living your best life.
If you aren’t one of these individuals, well just know that there’s still time. There is still time to start living your life for the approval of yourself instead of living for the approval of others. It’s not going to be easy, but every day brings a new opportunity to be a better version of yourself than you were the day before. Focus on being better instead of being perfect, and you will find your way to a happier and better life.
