Have you ever gone through a negative patch in life and no matter what you do, positive thoughts seem impossible to come by?
It leaves you wondering how you can change your thinking in the first place. If you are even able to control your thoughts, what are some of the things that you can do to start turning your negative thoughts into positive thoughts?
We all go through these patches in life where all we see is negativity. It could be for a day, it could be for a few weeks, or it could even be for a few years.
When something bad happens to us or the stress just becomes too astronomical to bear, it becomes a lot easier to start feeling sorry for ourselves and to think all of these negative thoughts than it is to focus on how good we actually have it in life and see the positives.
Where many go wrong is that they don’t realize the power that they possess. Instead of doing everything in their might to be conscious of the thoughts that they are thinking and working to change their thoughts, they just continue to go with the flow and allow the negative thoughts to rule their minds.
Truth be told, this was me just a few short weeks ago. Stress, negativity, doubt, you name it, I had been feeling it.
It got to the point where I started reflecting on my past and asking myself what I did a few years ago to completely change my mindset. I had lived in a very negative state of mind before and was able to completely change my outlook on life, so how could I do it again?
This has been my focus over the course of the last few weeks or so. Every day, I am trying to be more conscious of my thoughts so that I can once again start turning my negative thoughts into positive thoughts.
The Dangers of Negative Thinking
When it comes to negative thinking, we are our own worst enemies. We forget that we control the very thoughts that pass through our minds. Whether we know it to be true or not, we have the power to change these thoughts if we do not like them.
If we don’t find the will to change our thoughts, we could potentially experience one or several of the many dangers associated with negative thinking.
There are many dangers to negative thinking. For me, it left me feeling alone and hopeless. I would isolate myself from my friends and my family and began abusing my body for never being good enough.
As a result of constant negative thinking, I became diagnosed with depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, and just didn’t feel good about my life as a whole.
The hardest part about this was knowing that I was blessed. Seriously, my life is nothing short of a blessing and I felt as though something was wrong with me because I couldn’t find one thing to be grateful for. I didn’t want to be seen as a selfish person, but the thoughts that were passing through my mind made it impossible to find any sense of happiness.
From a social perspective, I became incredibly introverted. I have always been somewhat of an introvert, but I had completely closed myself off from everyone.
I lost a lot of friends over the years of dealing with negative emotions, I would lash out at those who were closest to me and wanted nothing but the best for me, and I stopped branching out and doing anything spontaneous.
Day in and day out, my life felt as though it was stuck on repeat much like a broken record. There was very little that excited me and very little that I was hopeful for.
It wasn’t until I decided to change my mindset that I began to enjoy life once again.
How To Turn Negative Thoughts Into Positive Thoughts
So how do you go about turning your negative thoughts into positive thoughts? How was I able to do this a few years ago and how am I trying to do the same today? Keyword… trying.
The first step to turning negative thoughts into positive thoughts is to be conscious and more aware of the very thoughts you are thinking. This means slowing down your life and paying more attention to what you are thinking instead of constantly rushing around going at a million mile-per-hour pace.
When we don’t take time to slow down, we lose all control. Instead of even being aware of the thoughts we think, we just focus on the next thing in front of our eyes. So if you are stuck in a negative state of mind, slow it down a bit and bring more awareness to your life.
One way to do this is through meditation. Meditation is a great way to slow your life down so that you can bring more awareness to your thoughts.
If you don’t like meditation, try writing. Give yourself an outlet to express your emotions. Writing also helps you to challenge your thoughts and really makes you focus on what your mind is thinking about. Writing is what has worked best for me, and if I hadn’t found this outlet, I don’t know if I would have ever been able to change my mindset.
Lastly, set reminders. Set an alarm on your phone to go off every so often that reminds you to slow down and just bring awareness to your thoughts. The more you do this, the more of an automatic habit it will become so that you will be able to focus on your thoughts without having to be reminded to do so.
The second step is to be forceful with your thoughts. It’s probably not what you were expecting, but it works.
When you are in a negative state of mind, you need to do everything in your power to focus on the positives in life. Even when you aren’t in a negative state of mind, you still need to do everything in your power to focus on the positives in life.
Again, the more you do this, the more of an automatic behavior it becomes.
See, we have allowed ourselves to think negatively for so long that it has become a habit. We think negative thoughts because we have never tried to break the habit of doing so.
If I’m going to be honest, we probably think more negative thoughts than positive ones for the sole fact that we simply aren’t grateful enough for the positives in our lives. We are expecting of the good in life, so when good happens, we just continue to go along with the flow of life instead of showing appreciation. When we take the time to slow our lives down, only then are we able to find the appreciation for all of the blessings that our lives are filled with.
Before You Go
Slowing down and also being forceful with my thoughts are probably the two things that have helped me the most in turning my negative thoughts into positive thoughts. If life isn’t going the way we want it to go, we need to be doing something that we aren’t currently doing.
If you are going through a rough patch, try these tips. Slow your thoughts down, bring more awareness to them, and forcefully change your thoughts by focusing on the good.
