“It’s not what we get in life that makes us happy; it’s who we become that makes us happy and being able to give because we have become more.” – Tony Robbins
There is going to be a time in the near future where you are going to feel like giving up. To be completely honest, you are probably going to feel like giving up on something today. It’s just how humans are wired.
We have a tendency to experience a sense of doubt or fear, and then we start to question if we actually have what it takes to achieve the things that we want to achieve in our life. At least I know that this happens to me on a daily basis.
I often dream of the days when I can travel the world, free from every constraint that is holding me down. The day when I can follow whatever dream that I wake up with and give up everything in order to start achieving it. Then, when my mind starts to wander too far, fear naturally starts to take over my mind.
Do I really have what it takes to turn all of my dreams into my reality? What happens if I fail and absolutely embrace myself? Why would I give up everything that I have right now just to chase something that may never come true?
These are just some of the negative thoughts that pass through my mind on a moments notice. And they sound all too familiar, don’t they? Not only are these the thoughts that pass through my mind, but they are probably pretty similar to the same ones that pass through your mind as well.
They are normal thoughts to experience. It’s normal to feel a sense of doubt when you are challenging yourself. It’s normal to feel a sense of fear when you are about to do something that is outside of your comfort zone. The one and only thing that’s not okay to do, though, is to give up on yourself. The minute that you give up on yourself, every single one of your dreams is washed away by the mediocre life that you are choosing to settle for.
For those who feel like giving up.
Think about why it is that you started chasing the goals that you are currently chasing. Is it to provide a better life for yourself? Is it to give your family everything that you ever dreamed of giving them? Maybe it is a way of giving back to the world for all that you have been fortunate enough to have in your life. Whatever the reason is for why you are chasing the goals that you are chasing, remember those reasons when you feel like giving up.
The second that you decide to give in to fear, the second that you allow the doubts in your mind to become a reality, the second that you start to actually listen to the judgment of others, you lose. All of the things that you have ever wanted will soon become a distant thought.
If you are reading this on the go, or if you are just skimming this, please slow down and think deeply about this one part.
You are often told that this is your one life to live, because well, it is. Think about this, though. The moment you give up, and the moment that you allow your fears to win becomes the moment that you will NEVER know what you could have achieved. Time is going to pass, circumstances are going to change, and if you ever want to achieve anything meaningful ever again, you will have to start from square one.
The way I see it, there is no other option. I can handle the doubt, I can handle all of the fears that pass through my mind, and I can handle any of the judgment that comes my way. But what I am not okay with handling, is the thought of never knowing. I can’t handle the fact that if I give up, I will never know what could have been. That thought of never knowing what could have been is enough to scare the living you-know-what out of me.
There are a few things that I want you to remember when you think about giving up.
- Fears, doubts, and judgment are all temporary feelings, but giving up on yourself is forever.
- If you give up, your entire life changes immediately. All of your fears will start to take priority over all of your desires, you will start to question every micro decision before making it, and you will never be able to truly believe in yourself the same way ever again.
All of this because you accepted the fact that giving up is an option, and it is one that you have already accepted before.
Nothing in life is ever going to be perfect.
The more that you strive for perfection instead of progression, the more disappointment you are going to experience. No matter what you do, no matter how hard you try, and no matter how much you want to be, you are never going to be perfect. The sooner that you embrace this fact the happier that you will be in life.
Life is not about being perfect. Life is about progression. It’s about learning from all of your mistakes, using the things that you learned to help make improvements in your life, and continuing to grow from the person that you are into the person that you want to become.
The choice is yours to make.
I can only tell you why you shouldn’t give up on yourself, but the choice is ultimately your choice to make. I am simply trying to help prevent you from experiencing the pain that I have felt throughout much of my life. Years of self-doubt, years of depression, and years of never feeling like I amounted to anything all stemmed from the fact that I constantly gave up on myself and the goals that I wanted to achieve.
I will be the first to say that this is not an enjoyable way to live the one life that we have to live, and I know that you will agree with this. But that is exactly what life is like when you give up on yourself: depressing, constant self-doubt, and feelings that you will never amount to anything.
Live your one life to the absolute fullest.
The next time that you think about giving up on yourself, think about why you started to chase your goals in the first place. Think about the thrill that you felt about living the life that you had never lived – the life you always dreamed of living.
Then ask yourself something. Ask yourself if giving up is going to provide any value to your life. Is it going to make you feel better about yourself? Is it going to get you any closer to your dreams? Is it going to lead you to the life that you dream of living?
The answer is no. Giving up on yourself is never the answer. It won’t help you to achieve your dreams, and it won’t lead you to the life that you dream of living. So to put it all in context, don’t do it. For those who feel like giving up, remember that absolutely nothing good will come of it.
