The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer is a very popular book in the personal development and self-improvement niche. And for good reason! It’s an amazing book that will help you to find a deeper meaning for life.
As the title of the book suggests, the book helps you to see the journey beyond yourself. It helps you to release your soul, to find meaning and purpose in your life, and to just live instead of always trying to force your way through life.
This is probably the part of the book that resonated most with me just because I am a person who does try to force everything.
As Singer goes into detail, we experience stress when we either try to pull life towards us or when we try to push life away. What does this mean? It means stress will always be present if we are not in a state of flow – if we are not fully present.
Life is going to happen either way. When we try to force life to come to us and control every aspect of our lives, we are naturally going to experience stress due to the sheer fact that we will never be able to fully control every event in our life.
Similarly, we will experience stress when we try to push away everything in life that doesn’t align with the mental image we have painted for ourselves. That’s what stress is – when we either force our way through life or push it away. It’s all dependent on that mental image.
Throughout the book, Singer will share insightful tips on how to find happiness in life. This isn’t some bs way to find happiness. This is lasting, permanent happiness.
How can you find happiness? By letting go of all conditions. If we let go of all conditions, we will never expect nor fear anything. All of these conditions are just roadblocks that we have allowed to consume our minds. When we let go of all conditions and accept that life is greater than just us, that’s when we will find happiness.
My favorite part of the book was the last two chapters as they helped to put everything into perspective. If you re struggling through life, think about death. Death is the ultimate teacher. There is no escaping it, and there is no way of knowing when you might die.
If somebody told you that you only had a week left to live, what would you do? You would probably try to fit in everything that you could and make that week the best week of your life, right?
Why not do that now? You don’t know if this will be your last week. In reflecting on the fact that you could very well die this week, it helps to take the fear away from some of the things that you normally worry about – at least it has for me.
Lastly, find happiness in life by letting go of judgment. Don’t judge yourself, don’t judge others, and don’t judge your surroundings. If you don’t judge anything, and instead see the beauty in everything, you will never be disappointed.
Singer gives a great example of this. Everything in the world is part of God’s creation. The sun, the rain, the animals, the rodents, what we perceive as beauty, and what we perceive as ugly, all of life around us is God’s creation. The best way to please God is to be grateful and give thanks for all of his creations.
Before You Go
This truly is an amazing book that I think everybody should read as it will help you find peace and stillness in life. But in case you are “too busy,” let me share with you the greatest takeaway.
Let life flow through you. Don’t force your way through life, and don’t resist life. Simply be present in the moment and love every moment for the blessing it is, because whether or not you like it, life will always continue onwards. There was life before you, and there will continue to be life once you leave.
