First of all, here’s the deal, nobody is better than you just like you are not better than anybody else. Sure, there may be some things in which others are better at or in which you are better at, but that doesn’t make others any better of a human being than you or vice-versa.
Everything in life comes down to your perception of it. How you think about something, somebody else, or even about yourself can have a drastic impact on your reality.
If you are not where you currently want to be in life, the answer is rather simple – then you need to surround yourself with those who inspire you the most.
Building A Network
“Your network is your net worth.” – Tim Sanders, former Yahoo! Director
I’m going to be completely honest, the last month or two have been somewhat of a struggle for me. At work, a lot is changing and it has made it incredibly difficult to stay as motivated as I normally am. And it’s not just me that feels this way, it’s everybody in my office.
It’s got to the point where people are starting to drop like flies. When I say that, I mean finding new jobs and getting out as soon as possible.
For most of those who have stayed up to this point, they spend the vast majority of their day complaining about factors in which they can’t control and expressing their dissatisfaction rather openly.
I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t started to take a toll on me. The more others complain, the more I see myself starting to fall into similar habits. As somebody who used to live to work, it’s now incredibly difficult to find the strength and motivation to even want to walk through the doors of my work.
It’s not just at work that I feel the effects of everybody else’s dissatisfaction, though. It’s also started to take a toll on me even when I am away from work. My creativity outside of work has plummeted, my spare time has been spent trying to find a new job that would bring more happiness and meaning to my life, and overall, I have simply just felt out of it.
Who Should You Surround Yourself With?
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn
Okay, there’s my complaining for the day. Thank you for listening.
What significance would my little rant have on your life? Well, for starters, it goes to show you that if you are not where you want to be in life, then you need to do something that you aren’t currently doing. Sitting around and waiting for everything to be gifted to you on a silver platter is never going to bring the results in which you are looking for.
Secondly, if you feel the way that I am feeling right now, lacking motivation, in a bit of a funk, not happy with your surroundings, then it is up to you to surround yourself with those who inspire you the most.
Now, the general rule of thumb is that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Lucky me, I have a full office of individuals that feel the same way. I am spending at least eight hours a day with the same people. That’s one-third of my life… If those individuals are complaining, how likely do you think I am to develop the same habits as those individuals?
Probably very likely.
The same goes for you. Those five individuals that you spend the most time with, odds are you are going to develop and resemble similar habits.
If you surround yourself with five millionaires, there’s a good chance that you will be the sixth. If you surround yourself with five individuals who live a healthy lifestyle, odds are you are going to live a healthy lifestyle as well. If you spend time with five people (or an office full of individuals) who complain nonstop, odds are you are probably going to be in that same mindset as well.
The Easiest Way To Stay Inspired
The easiest way to stay inspired is to surround yourself with individuals who share the same habits in which you wish to create. You could be the most talented and kind-hearted person in the world, but if you do not spend your time with five individuals who bring out the best in you, then very rarely will you best ever have its chance to shine.
Just like I am forced to do, you too have a decision to make. Life isn’t going to wield any significant changes unless we are willing to see these changes. So, what are you willing to do about where you are at in life? Are you going to create an environment of individuals who bring out the best in you, or are you going to stay put and let your life pass you by?
Actions speak louder than words, and it’s your responsibility to create the life for yourself in which you want to live.
