This last week I took a nice little four-day vacation to Cancun, Mexico. And after those four days, I was nowhere ready to come back to “reality.” I wasn’t ready to leave all of my friends, and I definitely wasn’t ready to get up and go back to work.
It felt so nice just to be able to get away for a few days and escape with having very little to worry about.
To make matters worse, the six-hour plane ride home seemed to take forever. Despite feeling a little sick in a metal tube flying over 10,000 feet above the ground, I was also reminiscing on the trip and wished that I could somehow go back in time and do it all over again.
I then remembered all of the other trips that I have taken this year. Trips to Nashville, to Utah, to Hawaii, and to Boston. I left each one of these places feeling the exact same way – I was not ready to leave.
Personally, traveling is one of my favorite things to do. Sure, the resorts are nice and all, but the part about traveling that I love the most is simply exploring unfamiliar territory. I love walking around aimlessly for hours wondering where I am going to end up.
But I simply don’t do enough of it.
Do More Of The Things You Love
For someone who loves to travel as much as I do, I simply don’t do it as much as I should be, or as much as I would like to be. And yesterday, on that plane ride home, I was forced to ask myself one simple question: why?
Why don’t I travel more?
Why don’t I go on more adventures?
Why am I not enjoying my life by doing the things that I love to do on a more frequent basis?
I mean, if I am not living my life doing what I enjoy, then what I am I doing?
I know that I say this all the time, but this truly is the one and only life that any of us ever get to live. Plain and simple, if we aren’t enjoying the life that we are living, then we are doing it all wrong.
In looking into my own reasonings for why I am not traveling more, I can come up with two excuses right off the bat. Just like most others, these excuses would be time and money. I either hide behind the excuse that I don’t have the time to travel, or the excuse that traveling on a consistent basis is far too expensive.
But these excuses aren’t the truth, they are simply excuses that help me feel better about myself for why I am not doing more of what I want to be doing. And I am not the only one who makes these excuses for not living life to the fullest… we all do.
Start Enjoying Life More
Too often we buy unnecessary things instead of saving our money for the things that matter the most to us. We have goals of being debt-free, to travel more, to buy a house, ect., but yet, we allow our excuse of not having enough money to stop us from doing so.
And what do we do to cover our unhappiness of not achieving our goals or living the life we want to be living? We go to the mall, buy new clothes, new shoes, and spend our money on things that are only putting us further away from our goals. While gifts may provide momentary happiness, the happiness that they provide is only short-lived.
The same can be said for time. We use the excuse that we don’t have the time to chase our dreams. We are too busy with work, with our families, with life… but oh, don’t worry, when the time comes to sit on the couch and watch our favorite TV show, you better believe we will be there.
See where I’m going with this?
You are meant to enjoy life, and if you are one of the ones who are constantly making excuses for why you aren’t enjoying life instead of finding a solution to start enjoying life more, then you are doing it all wrong.
I am going to challenge myself, and I want to challenge you as well. One of my goals, my dreams, and my aspirations is to travel more. So to do that, I am going to start traveling at least once a month.
It may just be somewhere close, or it may be somewhere far. I may just end up sleeping in my car, or maybe in a hotel. Maybe I have to travel alone, or maybe I find some friends to tag along.
Whatever the case may be, I am going to make no more excuses! All I know is that I want to start enjoying my life more, so I am going to be doing everything in my power to do just that. For me, the best way to enjoy life is by traveling.
Try doing the same. Set a goal for yourself to do something that you love to do on a more frequent basis. If that is traveling, then travel more. If that is hiking, then go hiking more. If that is laying out in the sun with a good book, then do that more. Quit making excuses for why you aren’t enjoying your life and start doing more of the things you love. Excuses will only hold you back if you allow them to, so move past your excuses, and start enjoying your life.
