Every so often, you are going to have that one day(s) where no matter how hard you try, you will not be happy. We all have days like this. But here is what we can do to prevent our mood from plummeting in a downward spiral. The answer is so simple but yet so hard for many of us to fulfill. Are you ready? Don’t check social media when you are down. Stay away from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and especially Tinder. When you are feeling down, you need to use every bit of strength that you have to stay logged off of social media. Let me tell you why.
Social media is nothing but a bunch of people (us) only sharing the highs of our lives. Whether it is a picture of someone on the best trip of their life, having dinner at the finest restaurant, or sitting front row at a Justin Bieber concert… You get the point. Nobody shares a sad post or a routine of their daily life. That is because their life is not much different than the rest of ours, they just portray their lives as perfect as possible on social media to boast. I don’t mean boasting in a negative way, but let’s face it, we all strive to get likes.
Social media causes us to compare ourselves to others. We compare our lifestyle, our bodies, our successes, ect. It is a constant uphill battle to see who can live the most lavish lifestyle. If somebody does something interesting, odds are that we are all going to try and one-up it. That is just how we are as humans. We always want the attention of others and we want to be portrayed as the best.
When you are feeling down, you are especially prone to comparing yourselves to others and to their lifestyle. When you are seeing all of the positive traits in other people’s lives, you are going to wonder why others are always happy and you are not. You are going to constantly compare your lives to others and will continue to to be disappointed because you are seeing all of the excitement in the lives of others.
What can we do when we are feeling down? The best thing that we can do is to stay off of social media when we are feeling down. You won’t be comparing yourselves to others and you won’t see your life as disappointing. If you are a social media freak (I am so this pertains to me) don’t look at others posts as them having a perfect life. Instead, see it as others making the most out of opportunities. You might want to try and follow some inspirational accounts. This will help mediate any disappointment and it will also give you some motivation to make it through the hard times.
What we all need to understand is that nobody is perfect and nobody lives a perfect life. Everyone goes through struggles in life. Also remember that money doesn’t buy happiness. While some might flaunt their earnings, they can be miserable when they are not in the spotlight. What we should do is focus on how fortunate we are to be in the position that we are in. Remember, we had a 1 in 400 trillion odds of being a human being. Cherish every moment and see how fortunate we truly are to have the best gift of all. Life.
