It can be easy to get caught up in the rush that surrounds us, and forget to show appreciation for all that we have. Let’s be real, we all have much more than we show gratitude for.
Not only is gratitude one of the strongest emotions that we can show to those around us, but it is also one of the strongest emotions that we can show ourselves as well. Tis the season, right? Tis the season to show thanks for all that we are blessed with, so why not practice showing gratitude. Why not do what it is that you can to make the world around you a better place for everyone.
Despite my many imperfections, here are some things that I am practicing to help and show gratitude every day.
Say thank you to others
It doesn’t matter how small or large the act might be, just say thank you. Whether somebody holds the door open for me, gives me a gift, or gives me a compliment, I want to do my best and remember to say “Thank you.”
Just by saying thank you to others, we are not only reiterating how grateful we are, but we are giving others the courtesy that they deserve. Kindness is a strength that is passed on when we show it to others.
While I am not always the best at this, I try to call distant family members every once in a while and express how much they mean to me. There is something about being able to hear the sincerness in others voice that makes any gesture more meaningful.
Take some time out of your day, and call those that you may even see later on in the day. Let them know how much they mean to you, and give them the appreciation that you are feeling.
Give a gift
There is no greater feeling in the world than putting a smile on somebody else’s face. While a gift is not necessary, it is definitely a great way to do so.
Coming from somebody who has always been stingy with their money, I will be the first to admit that it is worth every penny to see somebody smile when you give them a gift. Even if it is nothing extravagant, just the act of giving a small gift can make a large impact.
Keep a journal
One of the reasons that I love blogging is because I am able to read and reflect on anything that I have ever published. I am able to look back and see where I used to be in life, how far I have come, and where it is that I see myself going.
There are going to be days where we are not always happy and motivated, but if we can reflect on past experiences, it may help to brighten our days. It can help us to put in perspective how far we have come, and all of the moments that we have been blessed enough to experience.
Tell your family that you love them
Nothing shows others how much they mean to you than telling them how you feel. Whether it’s my family or friends, I try to be sure to tell them how grateful I am to have them. Without them, I don’t know where I would be. I fear that I may be nothing.
When I see my parents, I tell them that I love them. Heck, I still hug and kiss my parents. When I see my sisters, I tell them that I love them. And when I see my best friends, I tell them that I love them. For all they do for me, you better believe that I love them. Without them, I would not be where I am today.
Spend time with those who matter the most
Our relationships not only help to establish who we are, but also help to define our happiness. If somebody truly means a lot to you, spend as much time as you can with them. Share with them how they are making a positive impact on your life, and show how grateful you are to have them.
For me, I spend as much time with my family as possible. My family has always been there for me to catch me when I fall, and they have helped to lift me back up. They are the ones that matter the most to me, they help to bring happiness in my life, and they are the ones who help me to be the best me that I can be. That is why I spend as much time with my family as I do, and that is why I am grateful for each and every one of them.
There are many ways that you can show gratitude every day. It doesn’t matter what ways you show it in, just as long as you show it. Take some time out of your day, write down all you are thankful for, tell others how much they mean to you, or just reflect on your own thoughts. Once you show gratitude to the world around you, it’s weird, but for some reason, the world will tend to show it back (and yes, I am being sarcastic).
