First and foremost, drastic changes to your life probably aren’t going to happen overnight. Unless you win the lottery, have the ability to instantly forget about the past, and can go from zero to hero in the blink of an eye, it’s probably going to be a long and sometimes grueling process to improve your life.
Don’t let that discourage you, though. Trust me, at the end of it, or even in the midst of improving your life, the rewards are definitely worth the effort.
As I look back on the person I was a year ago, I think to myself: Who was that person? Who am I today? What changed between then and now that created such an enormous change? How is my life going to change in the years to come?
If you couldn’t tell, I’m a big thinker. But while I often ponder all of the possibilities of life, I also know what it is that I want to get out of my life. Let’s just say that the life I was living beforehand was not the life I had envisioned for myself.
In looking back on where I was two years ago, one year ago, heck, even a few months ago, the change that I see in myself is overwhelming. Never in my life have I been happier, more motivated, and more hopeful for the future that lies ahead. While it hasn’t always been this easy, I want to share with you 7 simple (but often overlooked) ways that I have been able to change my life, and how you can too.
7 Simple Ways to Improve Your Life
1. Surrender to life
I was never one who really used to “surrender” to life. I thought it was a bunch of hippie nonsense that couldn’t possibly provide any value to my life.
Well, I was mistaken. Surrendering to life has probably provided the greatest change in my life. No longer do I try to force every situation. Instead, I have learned to simply go with the flow, say yes to more opportunities, and realize that everything happens for a reason.
While we all have the desire to control every variable in our life, it’s important to remember that there was life before us and that there will be life after us. We are not as important as we think we are, and whether we like it or not, life’s plan for us will always be more powerful than our plan for life.
2. Take risks on yourself
Living a sheltered life is not fun. At least it wasn’t for me. I realized that if I wanted to get places in life that I had not yet been to, then I needed to do something in my everyday life that I wasn’t doing. That something – taking risks on myself.
It’s easy to ponder all that could go wrong when you decide to take risks, but what about all that could go right? Don’t you want to know what you are truly capable of achieving instead of always wondering “what if?” The thought of not knowing what could have been is what helped me to jump into the uncertainties of life and create my own destiny.
3. Know what you want in life
Going with the flow doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t set a direction in which you want your life to go in and work towards moving in that direction. Going with the flow means embracing life as it has been up to this point with the realization that you will never be able to change the past.
Nothing matters but right here and right now, and how you are going to use this moment to help create the life that you want for yourself.
4. Push aside your fears
Just like I have (and still do from time to time), you too probably allow your fears to stop you from experiencing all that life has to offer. You come up with all of these possibilities in your head for what could go wrong and allow that to stop you from moving forward.
How often, though, does reality ever match up with the way you envisioned it to? Never? Exactly. So don’t let your thoughts stop you from creating your life. Push aside your fears and create your life how you see fit, not by hiding from your fears.
It’s important to remember that comfort is the enemy to any and all success. If you want to improve your life, then you truly need to be willing to push your fears aside and jump on into all that life has to offer.
5. Never give up
Giving up is the only sure way to prevent yourself from living a better life. You aren’t meant to be ordinary, you are meant to be extraordinary. If you quit on yourself, though, you will never be better than ordinary.
Who cares if you fail. If you want to live a better life, then you need to learn to love failure as it means you are pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and giving yourself the opportunity to even live a better life.
When you fail, you can either panic and quit or you can stay calm and do your best to figure it out. One of these options will lead you towards living a better life, while the other will prevent you from ever reaching your potential. The choice is yours to make on which one you will live by.
6. Be grateful and stay optimistic
Focus on all that you have achieved, all that you have been blessed with, and all that consumes your life, not what you think you need, what you lack, or what you have struggled with in the past.
You are you and that is your greatest power. Find the peace within yourself for all that you are, and simply be grateful for the life that you are blessed enough to live. Sure, some things could be better, but they could always be worse as well. Learn to be grateful that it’s not.
7. Forget about perfection and focus on progression
I always wanted to be perfect. Never for myself, but in the eyes of others. Well, let’s just say that after years of striving for that perfection, I finally realized that I would never find it.
What may be perfect in the eyes of somebody else will never be perfect in the eyes of others. If you are trying to be perfect, you are going to spend your life playing the never-ending game of cat and mouse.
Instead of focusing on perfection, focus on progression. Wake up every day with a goal to be 1% better today than you were yesterday. While it may not lead to drastic changes immediately, life is a process, and the more you progress over time, the better off you will be in the end.
Creating change in your life isn’t easy, but nothing worth having in life ever comes easy. Let me tell you something though, the life that I am living now is so much better than the one I was living. Really the only thing that has changed throughout it all has been me.
I started to believe in myself, I started to show myself the respect that I deserve, and I started focusing on being better each and every day. All of these things have helped me to improve my life, and I know that they will do the same for you as well.
