I haven’t done any Shipt deliveries since before the whole Coronavirus pandemic hit, but before the shutdown, I was delivering groceries every weekend with Shipt. I would go out for a few hours on a Saturday and Sunday, and I would generally walk away with over $200.
Even now, during the pandemic, I walk into the grocery store and still see people with their Shipt shirts on and scanning barcodes as they walk up and down the aisles. While I thought business would have slowed down during the shutdown, I guess I’m also not surprised. Grocery shopping requires people to leave their homes, and well, Shipt is the solution to that problem.
What Is Shipt?
Shipt is a grocery delivery service that works with a network of shoppers and grocery stores throughout the U.S. to give you fast, safe, and convenient shopping options. All of this is done through the power of an app.
Think of it like Uber or Lyft, but instead of delivering people from Point A to Point B, you are delivering groceries.
Over the last few years, it has become an incredibly popular option for side hustlers who want to make some extra cash in their spare time. To be completely honest, there are some shoppers who do Shipt full-time.
It’s also just a convenient way to get some extra cash when you need it most. As long as you deliver at least one order every three months, you won’t be at risk of being “let go” from the platform.
How Does Shipt Work?
Getting back to the whole technology side of things…
Customers will go onto the Shipt app, place an order from the partnering grocery store of their choice, and will submit the order on the platform while selecting a one-hour window in which they want the order to be delivered.
From there, it’s game on for the shoppers. You will claim the order you want to take, shop for the order, pay with the pre-paid debit card Shipt supplies you with, and then will deliver that order to the customer.
In case you don’t know where things are located in the store or if you have the right item or not, Shipt has you covered. The app will display a picture of the item you are supposed to shop for, and you will also scan every item through the app. If you grabbed the wrong item or even the wrong size of something, the app will notify you that it is the incorrect item.
Shipt also supplies you with a few shirts when you first sign up so that if you are in the grocery store and need help, employees will know to look in back for items and are usually pretty good about helping you find the items you are struggling to locate.
Within the app, there is also a texting service so that you can text the customer if the store doesn’t have something. They can either replace the item with another one, or they can just choose to forget about it for the time being.
Once you have checked out, that’s really it. All that’s left is to deliver the groceries to the customer.
How Do You Make Money With Shipt?
There are a few different things you can do to increase your earnings on Shipt.
First is through taking larger orders. Granted they will be more time-consuming to shop for, Shipt pays every shopper a $5 minimum fee plus 7 percent of the cost of the order. That means if you claim a $100 order, you will get the $5 plus $7 at a minimum.
There is also a place where customers can tip you. 8 out of 10 Shipt customers will leave a tip for the shopper. The largest tip that I received was $30 for a $120 order. Not too bad if you ask me.
Obviously, the better service and experience you provide, the better the chance you have of being tipped. One of the things that I did with every delivery was put a little thank you note into the grocery bags just thanking the customer for giving me the chance to deliver for them.
Something as simple as that can really go a long ways.
Lastly, there are promotion orders. During the holiday season, Shipt can’t get orders out fast enough. If they are struggling to get orders out on time, they will include a promotion just for claiming an order. There were weekends where every order I was taking had a $20 promotion offer. This means that I got an additional $20, plus the minimum delivery fee, plus any tips. On some weekends, I would average $50+ for each order I took.
Is Shipt Grocery Delivery Worth It?
So, to answer the question of whether or not it’s worth it to deliver with Shipt, I would say it is absolutely worth it!
I liked Shipt because it doesn’t require you to really interact with others face-to-face. In being more of an introverted person, doing Shipt is more comfortable for me than Uber or Lyft. Plus, I really like grocery shopping and go to the grocery stores enough to know where everything generally is.
Best of all, you get to pick your hours. You don’t need to deliver if you don’t want to. If there is a day or a weekend where something comes up and you just don’t feel like going to the store, you don’t have to feel obligated to do so. You control your hours and when you want to work.
Finally, you can make really good money with Shipt. Again, if you do promotion orders, claim large orders, and constantly go out of your way for the customer, there are some days where you can potentially make well over $50 per order, and each order will take no longer than 2 hours from start to finish.
Before You Go
Out of all of the different side hustles I have tried, I would say that Shipt has by far been my favorite. From the flexibility it offers along with the potential amount of money you can make with it, Shipt is something that I seriously can’t recommend enough.
