Nearly one year ago I set out on a mission to do whatever was required to become the best possible version of myself that I could be. After years of feeling lost in my life, I knew that it was time for a change. I decided that it was time to take my personal well-being to the extremes.
For the next year, I was going to dedicate every ounce of energy into improving the person that I was and become the person that I always wanted to be.
One year later, and I feel like I am a completely different person. While my life is still far from perfect, I have never been as happy as I am today, and I have never had the amount of belief in myself that I do now.
With that said, I want to share with you these self-improvement tips that I have used over the last year in hopes that maybe one of them can help to change your life as well.
My 25 Self Improvement Tips For A Better Life
1. Love yourself.
If you want to live a better life, then you need to be willing to love yourself for the person who you already are. While this is something that a lot of us struggle with at times, never forget that nobody is you, and that is your greatest power. You are strong enough, you are worthy enough, and you are good enough.
2. Quit being a perfectionist.
Learn to make mistakes in life. If you aren’t willing to make mistakes, then you aren’t willing to learn. Take a chance, experience all that life has to offer, and live for the present moment. Plus, nobody is or ever will be perfect, so don’t waste your time trying to be.
3. Get uncomfortable.
If you want to live a life that you aren’t currently living, then you need to do something you haven’t done. Break out of your comfort zone, take risks on yourself, and break out of your comfort zone. Nothing good will ever come from staying confined to what you already know in life.
4. Stop comparing yourself to others.
Comparison is the thief of all joy. Everybody has different skill sets, and everybody learns at different rates. The more you compare your life to the lives of others, the more you fail to realize how incredible your life already is.
5. Follow your dreams.
Yes, to live a better life you need to follow your dreams. If you never pursue your dreams, you will never know if they will become your reality.
6. Do something nice for others.
Not only will this make a positive impact on somebody else’s life, but it will also make a positive impact on your life as well. By doing something nice for others, you are rewarded with a sense of gratification that you are helping to change a life.
7. Treat yourself as you want others to treat you.
The world around us is only going to show us the same amount of respect that we are willing to show ourselves. If we don’t respect ourselves for the beautiful individuals that we are, why would others respect us?
I wish I would have done this a lot sooner in my life. Sometimes we feel like we don’t have anybody to talk to and just need to release our thoughts. Well, they aren’t doing any good trapped in our minds, so grab a pen and some paper, and let them go.
9. Be open about how you feel.
Like I said in the last one, holding onto emotions won’t do you any good. And while you may think that you have nobody to talk to, there will always be more people there for you than you realize. Be open about what you are feeling, let go of your thoughts, and let others help you to solve your feelings.
10. Stop worrying about being judged.
Listen closely… You will NEVER be judged by somebody who is better than you. Everybody makes mistakes, everybody has their flaws, so don’t worry about somebody’s imperfect opinion of you.
11. Set goals.
Don’t go through life blindly. Set goals for yourself, know what direction you want your life to head in, and place those goals in an area where you will see them frequently. The more you see your goals, the more motivated you are, and the likelier you are to achieve them.
12. Use a planner and set reminders.
I used to hate keeping a planner because I thought it was pointless, but if you want to maximize your productivity, you need to plan your days out. Keep track of what you need to accomplish and when you need to accomplish it by. Again, the more you plan, the likelier you are to complete the plan.
13. Treat yourself.
Do something nice for yourself. Whether it is buying something that you want, making yourself a nice dinner, even something as simple as sitting in a hot bath, do something nice for yourself and acknowledge every single accomplishment.
14. Change your surroundings.
Create an uplifting surrounding and create an environment that makes you feel happier. If you do not enjoy your surroundings, your mood and attitude will reflect that. Clean your house, vacuum your car, go to a different coffee shop. Whatever it might be, change up your surroundings to change your mood.
15. Spend time with those who resemble what you want to become.
On average, we resemble the five people whom we spend the most time with. If you want to be happier, then start spending time with happier people. If you want to be more successful, then start spending time with people who share that same vision of success.
16. Read and listen.
Ask for help. Read how others have effectively changed their lives, and listen to the advice that they are giving you. Because something worked for them, though, it doesn’t guarantee that it will work for you. Pick up bits and pieces, and adapt your habits to what will benefit you the most.
17. Let go of control.
Please please please let go of control. This is one of the biggest things that has held me back from creating lifelong memories with those who matter the most. Give up control, let yourself live freely, and learn to adapt to different plans as they come and go. Trust me, this will make you a lot happier.
18. Do what makes you happy.
This is your life to live and only your life to live. Don’t do what you think will make others happy. Do what makes you happy. If you aren’t happy, nobody around you will be happy either.
19. Always look for the positives.
In every situation (yes, I did say every) there is always a positive. Look for the good in every situation, look for the strength and lessons that those situations are teaching you, and know that you will come out much stronger on the other side of challenges.
20. Get your body moving.
Just like how your mind needs an outlet to release its thoughts, so too does your body. Get it moving, get the endorphins flowing, and let go some of that tension. Exercise is a great stress reliever, and less stress helps to live a happier life.
21. Start your day with a positive affirmation.
I am a twenty-five-year-old male who has a poster of positive affirmations hanging right next to his bed. I don’t know how my future wife will feel about this, but since I have started to reinforce positive thoughts first thing in the morning, I have been happier and my self-belief has increased drastically.
22. Do the larger tasks right away in the morning.
You have the most energy right away in the morning, and you are less likely to be dragged down by everybody else’s schedules. This is a perfect time to do the things that you want to get done. Read, write, work on your own business, whatever it is, give it your undivided attention immediately when you wake up.
23. Live for the moment.
The past has come and gone, and the future is all but certain. Live in this moment right now, see all of the beauty that is already around you, and make the most of every single waking moment. You truly never do know if it might be your last.
24. Focus on all you have achieved.
Whether you believe it or not, you have achieved far more than you are giving yourself credit for. Look back to when you were a baby and compare that to where you are now. You have already overcome so many obstacles in your life that there is nothing that can stop you.
25. Stop waiting.
Start right now. Whatever it is that you want to achieve in your life, start right this very minute. The longer you wait, the less likely you are to start, and if you never start, you will never know what you are truly capable of achieving.
As I mentioned earlier, just because these tips have helped me to create a better life for myself does not mean that these exact tips will do the same for you. Am I confident that they will help you? Yes. But unless you try, you will simply never know.
The sooner you take action, the fast you start to see results. So use these tips, build off of them, and create the best life for yourself that you can possibly live. This is the only one that you will get, so make the most out of every second.
