Never Take A Day For Granted – It Might Be Your Last
If there was one thing that we can all learn from 9/11, it is to never take a day for granted. In the blink of an eye, tragedy can strike and it can impact our lives in more ways than we can ever imagine.
September 11th, 2001 started out as an ordinary day for me. As a 7 year old, I remember sitting on my parents bed with my morning bowl of cereal when I saw the second plane hit the World Trade Center. Not really know what was going on, I did what any confused kid would do, I yelled for my mom. Together, we sat there for what seemed to be an eternity. With our eyes glued to the TV, we watched as the towers collapsed. Little did I know at the time that this would become a day that would change the lives of every American.
Fifteen years later, I went to New York City and visited Ground Zero. Words can’t describe how it felt. The images from that tragic day fifteen years prior came back to my mind. Cold chills ran up my spine as I read the names. The names of 2,753 innocent people that lost their lives because of a senseless act carried out from hatred.
Sitting there on that cold December day and reading the names of the victims made me realize something. No matter how bad today might be, no matter what is happening in our lives, we should never take a day for granted. We should never take a day for granted because we will never get it back. We should never take a day for granted because we will never know if it might be our last.
Within a matter of seconds on the morning of September 11th, 2001, the lives of millions would forever change. More significantly, the lives of 2,753 innocent lives would be lost. Lives of men and women who were just living their daily lives. Men, women, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, and much more. All of these lives were lost because of ignorance, greed, and hatred.
Today is not only a day of remembrance, but it is also a day of reflection. Reflect on your life for a minute. Reflect on how lucky and blessed you are to just be alive today.
All of the pain that we face in life is nothing compared to the pain that the 2,753 innocent men and women had to suffer on September 11th. All of the choices that we are stuck on making are choices that 2,753 men and women will never have the choice to make. And the dreams that we all want to chase are dreams that 2,753 innocent men and women will never be able to dream.
My purpose with this is not to criticize anybody or to make anybody feel down about themselves. My purpose with this is to help every single one of us to realize truly how blessed we are to just be alive, and how blessed we are to have the opportunities that we do on a daily basis. No matter what you might be experiencing in life, or how difficult times might seem, never take a day for granted. Never take a day for granted, because you just never know if it might be your last.
My heart goes out to all of the victims of 9/11 and to their families. No life should ever be taken at the expense of somebody else’s ignorance and hatred. Every life is special, every life is beautiful, and every life is worth living. So never take it for granted.
