The person who was holding me back from my happiness was me. – Keanu Reeves

There is only one person in your life that can control how happy you are and the quality of your life. It isn’t your parents. It isn’t your siblings and friends. It isn’t even your spouse or children. The only person who can control how happy you are in life is you.

Surely you are not going to be able to control every outcome or the actions of those around you, but you have the power of perception. You have the ability to determine how different situations and challenges impact you.

When given time and thought, any situation can hold you back from achieving the life you desire to live. But when you choose to focus on the good that is around you and try to see the light in every situation, that’s when you will find true happiness.

Take Responsibility For Your Life

It took me years to come to terms with this. I was one who would blame others for the miserable life that I was living. The thing is, though, my life wasn’t miserable at all. It was my mindset that was preventing me from living a happier life.

When I started focusing on things that I could do to improve my mindset, that’s really when I started to enjoy life and find happiness. Instead of blaming others, I was simply forced to take responsibility for where I was at in life because only I had the power to change it.

Every day is going to bring new challenges. The point isn’t to master your happiness once and then just go through the motions of life. The point is to recognize that every day is going to bring a new opportunity for growth and a new opportunity to master your happiness in ways that you previously didn’t think possible.

8 Ways to Master Your Happiness

Here are 8 simple things that you can do today that will help you to master your happiness. But remember, happiness is a long term journey. Don’t just prioritize these things for today only. Prioritize them and expand on them for the rest of your life.

1. Remember That You Are In Charge of Your Own Happiness

No matter what you are experiencing in life, the choice is always your to make. Take your job for example. If you are tired of your current job, it is up to you to either find another one or make the most of the one you’re stuck with.

Relationships are the same. If you are in a negative relationship, it is entirely up to you to either work towards turning that relationship into a more positive one or ending it altogether.

Either way, your happiness is up to you and only you. Nobody else. Remind yourself of this anytime you’re feeling stuck and take charge of your own life.

2. Write down 5 things you’re grateful for

This is something that I do every single morning, and it’s something that I have found to be incredibly beneficial in my life. It helps me to prioritize the good in life first thing in the mornings, and it puts these positive thoughts at the front of my mind.

Gratitude is the best way to turn what you have into enough. Simply writing down 5 things you are grateful for is something that you can do right now, anywhere you are, and it doesn’t take much time either.

The benefits of writing down what you are grateful for are incredible. You will start to immediately feel a little better about things. It’s almost as if reflecting on what you are grateful for shines an internal light that awakens your spirits.

3. Help somebody out

Taking the time to help those around you not only makes them happy, but it also makes you happy as well. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which are chemicals in the brain that help us to find happiness.

In a Harvard study, employees who helped other colleagues were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and believe it or not, they were 40% more likely to get a promotion.

The same study showed the benefits of helping others outside of work as well. It showed that people who consistently spread kindness and help those around them were more likely to find happiness, even during times of high stress.

This doesn’t mean that you need to overdo it or constantly put others before yourself. You too need to be happy in order to reflect happiness into the lives of those around you. Helping others will have a positive influence on your happiness, but remember to focus and take care of yourself.

4. Smile and Laugh More

It’s crazy how our mood can be impacted just by doing something as simple as changing our facial expressions. Have you ever noticed how those who smile more often are the ones who seem happy? Like all the time!

That’s what smiling does to the brain. It doesn’t matter if you are actually happy or is your smile is genuine. The facial expressions of smiling helps the brain to release serotonin, which boost your mood.

If you find yourself in a negative mood, force yourself to smile. Hold the door open for somebody and smile. Reflect on your strengths and smile. Talk to someone and smile. Whatever you have to do, smile. Doing so can quickly turn your day around.

5. Stay away from anything negative

We become the average of the people and the thoughts that we surround ourselves with. If you spend your time around those who complain and are constantly negative, then there is a very good chance that you will be consumed in their problems and find yourself in the same mindset as well.

Avoid experiencing this by simply setting limits and distancing yourself from anyone or anything that is constantly negative. It might be hard, especially if it requires you to distance yourself from those who you were once close to, but it is going to be in your best interest. This is your life to live. You have to take control for how you want to live.

6. Don’t compare yourself to others

If you truly want to master your happiness, then you need to stop comparing yourself to those around you or to anybody for that matter. You are you and that is your greatest strength. Everybody has different strengths, weaknesses, abilities, and traits. Just because somebody has something that you don’t doesn’t define your worth.

Just like you should never compare yourself to others, you also shouldn’t take the opinions and judgment of others to heart. Not every person is going to like you or agree with the choices and decisions you make in life. That’s completely fine. They have their own life to live and so do you. So make the most of yours and disregard the criticism of others.

7. Believe in yourself and always stay true to your roots

There are going to be times in your life where you are going to doubt what you are capable of achieving. An obstacle may present itself and you question whether or not you have the strength to overcome it. This is where you have to believe in yourself. Nobody else is going to be able to achieve your goals and dreams for you. You need to do it for you.

Reflect on the things that matter the most to you. Look from within and listen to your heart. When you’re feeling confused, focus on the things that matter to you the most and that make you the happiest. This will help you to keep your spirits lifted high.

8. Live for today and hope for tomorrow

This moment in time, this is the only moment that is certain. You can’t change anything that has happened in the past, and you simply don’t know if you will even be alive for tomorrow. That’s why you need to live for today, cherish each and every moment as if it was your last, and hope for tomorrow. Doing so will give you a sense of gratitude and awareness for the life around you.

Having an optimistic look on life and being grateful for all that fills your life doesn’t just make you happier, it also improves nearly every aspect of your life.

We attract the thoughts that we think. When we think positive and happy thoughts, we attract the good in life. But if we think negative and angry thoughts, our reality will reflect as such. To prevent your mind from focusing on the negative thoughts, live for today and make the most out of the opportunity that you have directly in front of you.

Conclusion

While happiness may seem hard to obtain, it’s actually all around us and in every direction that we look. You just need to know where to look, what to do, and how to appreciate all that you are truly blessed with.

This is your life to live, nobody else’s. It’s time that you take control of your life and master your happiness. No one and nothing holds any power over you other than yourself. You are the master of your own destiny, so stay positive, stay motivated, and keep driving forwards with everything that you have.
