Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life … And Maybe The World by Admiral Willam H. McRaven is truly an inspirational book to read. Through the lessons that Admiral William H. McRaven shares, we can all get a better understanding of how we can transform our lives, and in turn, change the world for the better.
This very easy to read New York Times Bestseller is broken down into ten different tips that we can all implement into our daily lives. The best part is that the advice that McRaven shares isn’t difficult. Anybody can implement these pieces of advice into their life for nearly every situation that they encounter.
Chapter One: Start Your Day With A Task Completed
Start your day by completing an easy task. The task that McRaven recommends – make your bed. If you set a goal to make your bed and follow through with that goal immediately when you wake up in the morning, you are not only gaining a sense of pride in actually achieving your goals, but you are also gaining motivation to help you achieve even more of your goals throughout the rest of the day. Plus, who doesn’t like getting into a nicely made bed at night?
Chapter Two: You Can’t Go At It Alone
Life is difficult, there is no doubt about that. Instead of trying to go through life alone and having to overcome all of life’s obstacles by yourself, find someone to help you paddle through the waves. Nobody ever achieves any significant amount of success on their own, so learn from those who have achieved success, and don’t waste your time trying to do so.
Chapter Three: Only The Size of Your Heart Matters
Size and shape don’t matter when it comes to achieving your goals. All that truly matters is the size of your heart. You can be the strongest individual that you know, but if you don’t have the heart to overcome adversity, you won’t make it very far in life. To the contrary, you can be the smallest individual that you know, but if you continue to fight your way through all of life’s obstacles, you will find the success that you seek.
Chapter Four: Life’s Not Fair – Drive On
Life isn’t fair. There are going to be times where no matter how hard you try, you simply aren’t going to have a say in how certain events shape out in your life. Complaining isn’t going to do you any good though. No matter what happens, remember to stand tall, place one foot in front of the other, and drive on.
Chapter Five: Failure Can Make You Stronger
Think of life as a rollercoaster. There are going to be highs and there are going to be lows. There are also going to be times where you thrive and there are going to be times where you fail. Any time that you fail, though, know that it will only make you stronger. Learn from your mistakes, prevent yourself from making the same mistake moving forward, and move on with your life.
Chapter Six: You Must Dare Greatly
Those who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the only ones who do. Without pushing your limits, without believing in all that you are capable of achieving, and without diving headfirst into the uncertainty that lies ahead, you will never know what you are truly capable of achieving.
Chapter Seven: Stand Up To The Bullies
People are going to try and hold you back with anything that you do. There are always going to be bullies in the workplace, at school, and in public. Don’t let them get to you, and never let them win. In order to achieve success, you have to be courageous. Dig deep, find your strength, and live a life of courage.
Chapter Eight: Rise To The Occasion
Every single one of us will encounter dark times throughout the course of our lives. Whether it is the loss of a job, the loss of belongings, or worst of all, the loss of a loved one, we all experience pain and heartache. Do what you can to confront the dark moments in life. Dig deep, find your light, and be the very best that you can be.
Chapter Nine: Give People Hope
If you want to change the world, then be the one who gives others hope when nobody else will. It doesn’t matter the severity of the obstacles that you experience, remain hopeful, inspire others, and try to lift the world up each and every day in any way that you can. Do what you can today so that everybody can have a better day tomorrow.
Chapter Ten: Never, Ever Quit
If you quit, it’s game over. Everything that you have worked for up to this point will be completely worthless. Remember that as much pain as you may be experiencing right now, there is always somebody else out there who has it worse. If you refuse to give up, if you refuse to allow your failures to define you, and if you continue to make the most out of every single day, then life will be what you make of it – and only you can make it great.
What I thoroughly enjoyed about all of the advice from Admiral McRaven is that he doesn’t just push it on you, but he gives you examples of how he and his fellow SEALs have implemented these same pieces of advice into their daily lives.
Honestly, this book is exactly what I needed. Sometimes I get caught up in feeling sorry for myself that I lose sight of my dreams. This book has helped me to find the motivation that I need to keep moving forward. I mean, if the men and woman who sacrifice their lives for my freedom can make it through life overcoming all types of adversity, and do so without complaining, then I don’t have the right to complain.
Life truly is what we are willing to make it, and we all have the ability to change our lives and maybe even the world. But if you want to do so, then you need to be willing to at least start, and this book will help you do so.
