Daily Blog #285

We all face them. The doubts that frequently that pop up in our minds, and the lies that we are fed by others – lies that we are taught to believe. Not to sound like a pessimist, but I would dare say that we are told more lies throughout the course of our lives than the truth. This isn’t to say that the majority of those around us have bad intentions. It’s because they were taught the same lies, and those lies have become their reality.

I too used to be like most, and I believed these lies. I would listen to the doubts in my head, and I would listen to the beliefs of others. While others were just trying to protect me from any disappointment and misery, these emotions would quickly become how I felt about life for many years. But nothing good comes from listening to these lies. If we want to achieve any level of greatness, then we need to be willing to ignore these lies and follow our own truth.

So what are some of these lies? What are these lies that we are taught to believe in life?

Lie #1: You Need To Give Up On Your Dreams and Be More Realistic

As kids, we are taught to follow our dreams. Not only that, but we were born with the mindset that anything is possible. We live with this mindset that no matter how crazy a dream might be, we can achieve it.

But as we grow up, this mindset starts to shift. Not only do we start listening to the doubt in our minds, but we also start listening to those who tell us to grow up and be more realistic.

The truth is that you can achieve any dream that you work hard to achieve. If it has been done before, why not be the next one to achieve that dream. Even if nobody has achieved your dream, be the first to do so. Greatness comes to those who are willing to believe, and to those who never give up.

Lie #2: If You Fail, You Are Not Good Enough

This is the lie that took me the longest to overcome. I used to listen to those who would tell me that I was not good enough, and that I would never achieve my dreams no matter how hard I tried. I would also listen to my own doubts and fears. Doubts and fears that told me I wasn’t good enough because I had failed.

In all reality, though, failure is life’s way of rewarding those who are willing to work towards their beliefs without giving up. If you are willing to overcome enough failure without giving up on yourself or your beliefs, then life will reward you by helping to turn your dreams into your reality. That timing is different for everyone, but as long as you work hard and believe, it will come.

Lie #3: Your Worth Is Defined By Your Bank Account

For some reason, we have allowed the belief into our minds that success is defined by money, and that money is the only factor that determines success. If we don’t have the same amount, or more money than others, than we are not successful.

But money does not define happiness, nor does money define success. What defines success, is how happy you are with the life that you are living. If you can wake up each and every day with a smile on your face, and if you truly believe in all that you are capable of, then you are successful. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

Why You Shouldn’t Believe These Lies

No matter how many times you hear these lies, never believe them. Never allow your own fears, or the negativity of others stop you from doing what you believe in. As long as you believe in yourself, and follow your dreams, anything is possible.

Take Michael Jordan for example. Arguably the greatest player to ever play in the NBA was cut from his varsity basketball team his sophomore year of high school. Instead of listening to the lies of those who told him that he wasn’t good enough, and the many doubts that consumed his mind, he used that experience as motivation to work harder than he ever had before. The rest of the story? Well the rest has gone down in history along with the 32,292 points he scored, the six NBA championships, and the five NBA MVP titles that he racked up.

You know the game Angry Birds? Angry Birds was developed by Rovio. Prior to releasing Angry Birds in 2009, Rovio had developed 51 games that failed miserably. Had they have listened to the failure that they had endured, the 12 million people that have downloaded Angry Birds would never have experienced the game.

Lastly, we have all heard of the brand Dyson, right? You know, the $3 Billion vacuum empire. The same company that also created the bladeless fans. Did you know that James Dyson created over 5,000 prototypes before he ever created a vacuum that worked? Think about that, over 5,000 builds before ever inventing one that worked. You want to talk about failure, James Dyson experienced failure more times than anyone.

Believe And You Shall Receive

Maybe you gave up on your childhood dreams. Maybe you have developed new dreams that you want to become your reality. If that’s the case, go all in. Don’t look back and focus on what might have been. Instead, look directly in front of you and focus on what WILL be. Whatever your dreams consist of, believe in them. Believe and you shall receive.

The only thing that you will ever regret in life, is not doing more of the things that meant something to you. So do more. Do more of the things that you love to do, and live the life that you were meant to live.
