Legacy Over Currency: What It Means
Ok, I have been on a major Gary Vee kick here for the few weeks. Like I said in yesterday’s post, Master Your Own Thoughts & Focus, I have been starting my mornings by listening to his daily podcast. During the day, I manage to find myself reading his blog and watching one of the hundreds of videos on his YouTube channel. I am not only captured by the energy in every piece of content, but I am also captured by the context. None of them hit closer to home than the saying that he is best known for, legacy over currency.
Currency has always been one of my weaknesses. I love the thought of money, enjoy saving money, and never spend a dime unless I have to. Sounds like a lot of people, right? Well, maybe. What isnt ordinary is the fact that it got to the point where it controlled my life. I’m talking major control. I could forget the idea of buying a new pair of shoes for myself, I wouldn’t even buy a soda in the check-out line at the grocery store.
The thought of spending money on anything unnecessary would just stress me out. There was always this fear in my head that I would lose my job or something tragic might happen. My thought process focused solely on saving so that in case something were to happen, I would be financially ok. I was scared of being broke or being deemed as a failure. To me, money meant success. Money meant happiness. Once again, I was completely wrong.
As my savings only grew, the more frugal and stingy I became. I wasn’t doing anything to better myself as a human, I was just letting it sit there and wasn’t doing anything with it. Money was simply controlling my thoughts and ruling my life. I didn’t want to live like this, but I couldn’t escape my own fears. To be frank, I don’t think anyone would want to live like this.
As humans, our job is to provide a better world for generations to come. We should want to share with others. We should want to help each other. Most importantly, we should want to leave a better impact on the community around us. By focusing on a number, I wasn’t helping anyone, I was only hurting myself.
Recently, I have tried to give up on the stress of numbers. From counting calories, to looking at the money in my bank account, just everything to do with numbers. Screw it all. I want to live in the present moment and focus on life for the many blessing that it has to offer. If this means spending my paycheck on a once in a lifetime opportunity, then so be it. You are never going to get that moment back, so why not live for it.
Do you want to know what is more important than currency? Legacy. All of the fancy cars and the big houses that you might have may be nice and all, but they aren’t ever going to define you. In 20 years, people aren’t going to look back and think about the BMW that you are riding around in. It has zero impact on them and society. They will, however, remember you going out of your way to help others who are in need. They will remember the impact that you had on others, and the legacy you left behind.
This my friends, is what life is truly about. This is what we should try to focus our lives around. I think we all know that we are not going to live forever. So let me ask you one more question. When you die, would you rather be known for the amount of money that you saved up, or for the impact that you had on others? I hope that you would rather be known for the impact that you had.
Giving up on the thought of money has not always been an easy goal. There are times where I still find myself being frugal and hesitant with my money, but it is nowhere near as bad as it was. More so than anything, I am proud of myself for trying and understanding what really matters in my life. I encourage you to live your life focused around leaving a legacy instead of focusing on currency. Trust me, coming from a frugal person, it is much more rewarding to do stuff for others than it is just having money laying around. Odds are that it won’t be easy, but you will feel a sense of accomplishment and joy by creating a better world.
