We all see these articles about “How to Live A Better Life” or “How To Achieve All of Your Dreams” or so on and so forth. I mean, if I’m going to be real, these are examples of some of the things that I write about.
They can be broad, however. Something that may help me to progress in life may not help you. And something that may help you to progress in life may not help the next person.
But today, it’s time for a little reverse psychology. When it comes to making the most out of life, to finding happiness and success, or to finding meaning and purpose, the characteristics and behaviors we all endure are vastly different. When it comes to stopping ourselves from living a better life, however, the characteristics and behaviors that we share are more similar than they are different.
What do these behaviors and characteristics look like you may ask? Well, here are some things you can do to stop yourself from living a better life. And, before we get started, let’s be clear… you want to avoid these things.
How to Stop Yourself From Living A Better Life
1. Talking Negatively About Yourself
I am dumb. I don’t have what it takes to be successful in my life. I am incapable of having any meaningful relationships. I am weak. I am ugly. I am fat.
If you don’t want to live a better life, then keep thinking these exact thoughts because nothing will sabotage your happiness and success more than the negative words that you tell yourself.
Tip: If you do want to live a better life, then avoid these thoughts and replace them with positive ones. I am strong. I am worthy of happiness and success. I am loved. I am me and that is my greatest power. These are the things that you should really be telling yourself.
2. Caring About What Others Think
Another way to stop yourself from living a better life is by caring about what others think of you. I mean forget about finding purpose and meaning in your life, as long as others approve of you, then that’s all that matters, right?
Tip: This is your life to live. Forget about what others think about you. They have their own life to live and you have yours. Quit striving for the approval of others, and instead, strive for the approval of yourself.
3. Give Up When You Fail
Life’s hard, but if something doesn’t go according to plan right off the bat, then that must mean it just wasn’t meant to be. It’s time to find something new right away, fail, and continue the process of giving up for the rest of our existence.
Tip: If you’re not failing, then you’re not trying hard enough. Take chances on yourself, learn from your mistakes, and if you get knocked down (which you will), get right back up and keep going.
4. Looking For The Easy Way Out
Life is meant to be fun, and since it’s meant to be fun, let’s just be lazy and take the easy way out. We’ve worked hard in the past, so now it’s time to coast our way through life, sit back, and sip Pina Coladas for the rest of our days.
Tip: nothing worth having in life ever comes easy, and nothing that comes easy in life is ever worth having. Challenge yourself, grow from your mistakes, and strive to be the best that you can be each and every single day.
5. Making Excuses
Ah, my favorite. See, very little will cause you more failure and heartache than making excuses for why you can’t do something instead of why you can. Excuses are the enemy to any and all success, so if you want to stop yourself from living a better life, then keep it up with them.
Tip: You are stronger than any of your excuses. Keep your head up, believe in all that you are capable of achieving, and please… for the sake of your personal well-being, never give up on yourself.
The simple truth is that you do deserve to live a better life. We all do! But it’s up to each and every one of us to make the changes to our own lives that we wish to see.
If you want to stop yourself from living a better life, then follow these tips. But… if you do want to live a better life, which is what I would strongly recommend, then avoid doing these five things at all costs.
