What are you most grateful for in your life?
Seriously, today of all days, take a moment and think about it. Maybe it’s your family, your job, the friends that surround you, or maybe a combination of all of these things. Whatever you are most grateful for, today is your day to express your gratitude. Today is World Gratitude Day – a perfect day for you to slow down your life, acknowledge all that you are blessed with, and to express gratitude to others and to the world around you.
Too often, we get caught in the rush of life where we become expecting of everything. Pretty soon we start to focus on all that we don’t have in life instead of all that we are blessed to have. I mean, let’s be real for a moment, life and everything in it is a blessing, we just don’t take the time to slow down enough to appreciate it.
So today, make it your mission to slow down a bit and express your gratitude. Go out of your way to hold the door open for a stranger, call your parents and tell them how thankful you are for all that they have done for you, give yourself a pat on the back and acknowledge all that you have accomplished so far in your life, or simply start by focusing in on the moment in which you are living in and finding stillness. Being grateful will only improve your life, and here are some powerful ways how it does.
4 Ways How Gratitude Can Change Your Life
1. Your life becomes the gift that it was meant to be.
Expressing gratitude makes us all realize that life is a gift. When we take the times to slow down and to appreciate all that we have, the people who have impacted our lives, and how far we have come over time, we start to find a deep feeling of happiness and stillness. No longer is life about trying to keep up with the Joneses, it’s about finding peace and gratitude for the life that you are living.
2. Your overall happiness increases.
This one is a proven fact – the more grateful you are, the more positive of a person you become. As well all know, the key to happiness is positivity. When you focus on the good, the more that good things find their way into your life. The more good that finds its way to you, the happier of a person you will generally be.
When you learn to count your blessings and all that you have, it helps to put your life into perspective. It’s not about having the most or needing all of the latest and greatest things, it’s about appreciating all that you already have and realizing all that you have is already more than enough.
Once you start focusing on gratitude, you won’t need to play the cat and mouse game of needing everything because you will already be happy.
3. You become more generous.
When you realize how fortunate you are, it’s common to want to give back to those who may not be as fortunate as you. In doing so, you are not only improving your life, you are not only improving the person’s life who you directly showed generosity to, but who knows if they do the same for others. It can lead to a trickle-down effect where your one act of generosity can be the reason behind hundreds or thousands of random acts of generosity. That in and of itself is a pretty cool feeling.
You don’t always have to give materialistic items. Hold the door open for a stranger, give a hug to someone who is down, say thank you to others, even giving somebody your undivided attention is an act of generosity. It shows them that they matter and that you care about them.
4. You find stillness and less worry.
If you don’t focus on the things that you don’t have, then you won’t worry about not having enough. Things don’t define who you are as a person, but your behaviors do. Be somebody who focuses on the moment in which they are living, all that they have accomplished, and the amazing gift of life that they are living, not somebody who always needs more, who never acknowledges the life that they are living, and who is always on the hunt for more just to please others. This will only lead to a long and unfulfilling life. That much I can promise you.
Gratitude is a choice. It’s a choice that we all have the ability to make no matter what stages we are at in life, and it’s a choice that, in which by making, our lives can only improve.
There are a lot of ways to express your gratitude. Whatever you are most thankful for in your life, use today as your way to express it. Showing gratitude towards others and the world around you is not only good for you, but it is also good for the world around you.
