Goal Setting To The Extreme… But It Works

We all set goals for ourselves with the expectation that these goals will soon become our reality, right? I mean, if we didn’t set goals with the expectation that we would actually achieve them, then why would we even bother to waste our time?

Expecting our goals to simply become our reality won’t cut it, though, and this is, unfortunately, where many of us go wrong. We lose sight of our goals until we revisit them only to wonder where we went wrong.

Maybe it was a lack of effort that caused our struggles, or maybe it was a lack of direction. Either way, I want to share with you something that I have learned here recently. It takes goal setting to the extreme… but just know that this method works.

Goal Setting To The Extreme

I am currently reading The ONE Thing right now by Gary Keller. If you haven’t read it yet, you need to. I know I say this about the majority of the books that I read, but it just seems like every book that I read is only getting better than the last.

There is a lesson in this book, though, that I want to share with you so that you can implement it in your daily life.

We all have that ONE Thing that we want to achieve. That one monstrous goal that is going to take a long time to achieve, but we someday see ourselves accomplishing it. Maybe it’s owning a mansion, living in a certain location, or being able to give our kids everything they want in life. Whatever it may be, think about your ONE Thing, that one dream that you want to achieve in life.

Instead of doing nothing and waiting for your one thing to become your reality like many of us do, why not start working towards that goal? Why not start actively pursuing that goal to ensure that it will actually become your reality?

The Lesson

So where do you start? How do you achieve a goal that seems next to impossible to achieve? Well, as Keller outlines, you start now. You start by asking yourself what’s the one thing that you can do in the next five years to achieve your ONE Thing?

Alright, now let’s use Keller’s guide to goal setting and take it to the extreme. What’s the one thing you can do in the next year to achieve your five-year goal, that will help you to achieve your ONE Thing. Now, what’s the one thing you can do this month so you’re on track to achieve your goal for this year, so you’re on track to achieve your five-year goal, so you’re on track to achieve your ONE Thing? What can you do this week so you’re on track to achieve your goal for this month, so that you’re on track to achieve your one-year goal, so that you’re on track to achieve your five-year goal, so that you’re on track to achieve your ONE Thing?

How about today? What can you do today to help get you on track to achieve your goal for the week, which then continues down the line? How about right now? What can you do right now that is going to get you on track to achieve your weekly goal, so that you’re on track to achieve your monthly goal, so that you’re on track to achieve your yearly goal, so that you’re on track to achieve your five-year goal, so that you’re on track to achieve your ONE Thing? That one thing now, just do it, because if you don’t, you won’t ever achieve that distant goal.

The Domino Effect

I get it, it’s a lot of information to take in all at once. It was for me too when I first read it. But it’s like the domino effect. Once you start to achieve your one goal for today, all of the dominos that lie behind that one thing that you need to do today will start to fall towards your ONE Thing that you want to achieve in life.

I get it, it’s a lot of information to take in at once. No matter what, though, just know that it works. The key to goal setting isn’t to overwhelm yourself, but rather to control what you can control. That’s why those who break their goals down into smaller and more attainable goals are more likely to succeed.

With that said, start right now. Start now so that you can set yourself up for success tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that, and so on. What you do today will either help you, or it will only hurt you. Don’t make the same mistake that many do, and start focusing on what you can do today to set yourself up for success later on.
