I want to share something with you that I have learned recently about giving up. It’s more of like a personal experiment if you will.
About a month ago, I was looking online for ways to make some additional passive income. One of the methods that I came across was selling printables on Etsy. It seemed like a good and easy way to start earning a few dollars here and there, so I opened up a store.
I didn’t just want to put words on a page though and throw them up for sale. I wanted to make printables that others were going to enjoy. After some thought, I decided to start making motivational and inspirational printables. From quotes, short sayings, even a few one letter words, I felt as though I had come across a good idea.
The Cost of Opportunity
The cost was little. It was actually free to open up a store on Etsy, and I was only going to be charged $.20 on a monthly occurrence for every listing that I had up. Do the math; if you have 20 listings on your Etsy shop, that’s $4.00 per month. That fee can be covered by one sale depending on how much you sell a product for.
I wanted to make my shop as convenient as possible for customers while providing value to them. As soon as I made a sale, the customer would have access to various downloads where they could then print out the option that they chose and either frame it, hang it on their wall, put it on their desk at work, or use it as some type of wallpaper. All for the low price of $1.99 per print.
To me, it sounded like a good idea. Even as somebody who hates spending their money, I could see myself buying these printables and using them as some type of decoration, so surely I thought others would feel the same way as well.
But the sales never came. After spending hours designing numerous printables, doing some keyword research, and creating an Etsy shop, I hadn’t made one single sale.
Giving Up On Ourselves
Now, I had only had my shop open for a brief amount of time, so I don’t know if it just takes time for the Etsy algorithm to pick up my work, but I was tired of waiting. I just didn’t see the value in spending money to keep a shop open that wasn’t making me any money in return. Granted it was only $0.20 for each listing on my shop, money is money, and as I mentioned earlier, it’s something I hate losing.
After just one month after opening an Etsy shop, I decided to shut it down. I was done. If I wasn’t going to make money right away, then I thought it would be best to focus my attention elsewhere.
It was more of a rash decision than anything, but I went into my shop and shut it down. And just as one final slap in the face, I had to pay a prorated fee for the listings that I had up in order to close my shop down.
What I Learned From My Failure
Something hasn’t felt right since I closed down my shop. It’s not that I was expecting to make millions of dollars on Etsy or anything, but I feel as if I let myself down.
I talk about the importance of following your dreams and never giving up no matter how hard the going may get, and here I had just given up on something that I was somewhat enjoying after just one month.
Not only that, but any and all possibilities regarding my shop closed the moment I hit the “Quit” button. Who knows, I may have had to work hard for another year before making my first sale, or it may have come the following day. My shop may have taken off and made many sales in the following week, or it may not have at all. But because I quit and gave up, I will simply never know.
This feeling that I have had, it’s one that I never want to feel again. I hate questioning my worth and my abilities, but because I quit on myself, what else should I expect? It’s definitely going to make me reconsider giving up on anything in the near future.
Learn From My Mistakes
I want you to take one thing away from reading this; NEVER GIVE UP.
No matter what you do, giving up on yourself is never going to lead to the life that you envision for yourself or the completion of the goals that you have set. If anything, you are only going to feel down about yourself, your strength, and you are going to constantly question whether or not you have what it takes to actually achieve any of your goals in the future.
All of that can be avoided, and it’s done by continuing to believe in yourself when the going gets tough, as well as by working as hard as you can for however long it takes for you to achieve your goals.
Life isn’t always going to be easy, but as we all know, nothing in life worth having will ever come easy, and nothing in life that comes easy is worth having.
With anything that you do in life, never give up. No matter how many times people laugh at you, walk all over you, or just plain ignore you, you have to do what’s going to be most beneficial for you, and you have to keep pushing forward because that’s the only way you are ever going to achieve the goals you have for yourself.
It doesn’t matter if we only progress just a little bit each day, progress is progress however you look at it. What matters is that we make some progress and continue to believe in yourself at all times. That’s how you are going to find success and happiness in your life.
