Here’s the thing about limiting beliefs… they only exist in our minds if we allow them to.

Limiting beliefs are those beliefs that stop us short of achieving anything outstanding or meaningful. They are the beliefs that leave us feeling constrained and paralyzed. And they are the beliefs that suck every last ounce of happiness and self-belief that we have in ourselves.

As Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.”

See, if we don’t believe that we have the ability to change, then we probably aren’t going to change. We aren’t going to work towards change, we aren’t going to recognize opportunity, and we definitely aren’t going to take any chances that require us to push past our comfort zones.

But when we do believe we have the ability to change, we do just that – change. We grow in ways we never thought imaginable, we start taking more and more chances on ourselves, and we start achieving more and more of the goals that we set out to achieve.

Why Do We Limit Our Beliefs?

There are two types of minds out there. Yes, you reading this right now, you are one or the other.

The first type of mindset is called a fixed mindset. Individuals with fixed mindsets are individuals who believe you are either born talented or you aren’t. No matter what you do over the course of your life to try and improve, if you aren’t born talented, then you aren’t going to succeed.

You believe that all of your attributes and abilities are essentially unchangeable. You can spend hours upon hours practicing, but no matter how much you practice, you are never going to get better.

As a result, individuals with a fixed mindset take fewer chances. They don’t want to see themselves as failures, so they are going to be more inclined to stay within their comfort zone and avoid risk at all costs.

The second type of mindset is called a growth mindset. Individuals with a growth mindset are individuals who believe that it doesn’t matter how skilled you were born, there is always room for improvement.

You believe that everybody has different and unique abilities, but you also believe that these abilities can be developed through a lot of hard work and dedication. Just because something may not come naturally doesn’t mean that you can’t conquer it.

As a result, individuals with a growth mindset are the ones who embrace challenges. They aren’t afraid of failure. In fact, they thrive on failure. They see every failure as a learning opportunity and a chance to grow into a better and stronger individual.

Needless to say, individuals with a growth mindset are the ones who learn more over the course of their lives. Because of their willingness to learn, they are often the ones who achieve greater levels of success.

How To Get Rid of Your Limiting Beliefs

What if you have a fixed mindset? What can you do to overcome the limiting beliefs of a fixed mindset and develop a growth mindset? And yes, you can change your mindset.

First of all, if you have a fixed mindset, kudos to you for reading this far as you’re reading all about change. Change probably isn’t something that you care too much about or a word that you truly want to hear.

If you truly want to develop a stronger mindset and get rid of all of your limiting beliefs, here are some things that I recommend you practice on every single day. Remember, you aren’t going to be perfect right off the bat. Actually, you are never going to be perfect. So focus on progression, not perfection.

Step 1: Eliminate all of your excuses

The worst excuse that you can make for yourself is the excuse of not having enough time. If you want to change, you need to be willing to make the time to change.

Everybody gets the same twenty-four hours in a day. Whether you like it or not, you are not going to get any more. How you choose to spend your time is solely and entirely up to you.

You can sit and make excuses for yourself all you want, but it’s never going to benefit you. The more you make excuses, the more time you are wasting. The more time you waste, the longer it’s going to take to grow into the person you want to become.

If you want to achieve your goals badly enough, then you need to make time for them. Quit watching TV at night. Wake up a few hours earlier each morning. Don’t spend your weekend shopping and wasting time. Prioritize your goals and eliminate any and all excuses

Step 2: Focus on your growth

Look, just because you failed something now doesn’t mean that you are a failure for life. What are some of the things you learned from your failures that can better you moving forward? What are some of the things you could have done differently?

Repeat after me. There is no such thing as perfection

Wherever you are at, regardless of how much you have or haven’t achieved, there is always room for improvement. Every day is a new opportunity to learn something new, to increase your knowledge, and to grow from who you were yesterday into who you want to become today.

Step 3: See the bigger picture of life

On average, you are going to be alive for nearly 80 years. How can you possibly expect to have life figured out by the time your twenty, forty, or even eighty?

Life itself is such a long term game. You are going to miraculously achieve all of your wildest dreams overnight. Nothing worth having come easy, and nothing that comes easy is worth having.

You are going to experience many challenges over the course of your life. This doesn’t mean that you have somehow failed or that you aren’t meant to do something. This means that you have an opportunity to expand on what you already know.

Life is all about continuing to grow and develop in any way that you can, so see the bigger picture of life and get excited to learn.

Final Thoughts

Overcoming your limiting beliefs isn’t going to be an easy task – especially if you have a fixed mindset. It’s going to require a lot of time, a lot of effort, a lot of dedication, and a lot of positive reinforcement when you do find yourself falling back into old habits.

But you know what? You can do this! I am a firm believer that everybody has the ability to create whatever life they envision for themselves. Those who achieve success do so because of their willingness to learn from their mistakes and their desire to improve on who they are as individuals with each and every day that passes.

Be that person and there isn’t anything that you won’t be able to achieve.
