Why you should focus on your strengths.
“Too many people want to be something versus recognizing what they are.” Gary Vaynerchuk
Far too often, we second guess ourselves and wonder what it is that we can do better in life. Why can’t we be like that person, what do we need to improve on, what are the things that we lack in life? Okay, well at least I know that I do.
I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night. I got into bed at 9:30pm, watched an episode of Blue Bloods (one of my new favorite shows), and then I tried to close my eyes. While my eyes were closed, my mind was racing… for the next two hours.
I just kept asking myself the same questions over and over again in my head. What are the things that I lack in life? What can I do to become better? How can I be the best person that I can be? To be honest, it was these questions that were stressing me out, and it was these questions that prevented me from falling asleep.
So, how did I finally end up falling asleep? By telling my mind to shut the [bleep] up and focus on my strengths instead of my weaknesses.
I know that this is a lot easier said than done. But when I focus on my strengths instead of my weaknesses, the stress seems to minimize, I become a happier person, I am more enjoyable to be around (obviously), and I am able to think more clearly.
See, it shouldn’t matter what other people are doing in life, or what others are accomplishing in their own lives. The only thing that I should be focused on, is what I can do to be a better person, and focusing on what I am good at. And this is the final thought that popped into my mind before I finally fell asleep.
It is easy to get caught up in trying to be someone that we aren’t instead of accepting and recognizing the characteristics that truly define us. But when we focus on others, and when we lose sight of the things that truly matter to us, it is then that we struggle to find our true identity.
I am not a millionaire. I am not the world’s most athletic person. Not only am I not any of these, but who knows if I ever will be.
What I do know, is that I am happy. I am a believer, and I am a warrior. I like to think that I am doing my part to make the world a better place, and I like to think that I make a positive impact in the lives of others. These are what I see as my strengths, and these are the strengths that define me.
I have realized that I will never be perfect, and I am okay with that. Realistically speaking, there is no such thing as being perfect. While I have accepted that, I have also realized that I am my best when I focus on my strengths. It is those strengths that define me as a person, and not my weaknesses. Focusing solely on the things that I lack, or the things that I don’t have in life will not make me a better person. They are not going to bring joy to my life. What will, is using my strengths to my advantage.
Before I conclude, I want to help to put this into perspective. Any person that you admire, why is it that you admire that person? I am going to take a wild guess and say that you admire them for their strengths.
You probably don’t look at someone and say “I like them because they failed a test,” or “That person is awesome because they only think about themselves.” Right? So if the people you admire and the people that inspire you got to where they are in life by focusing on their strengths, then why aren’t you?
We are all going to have things that we are bad at or things that we lack in life. But more importantly, we all have things that we are good at. Use your strengths to help define who you are as a person. It is these strengths that will take you far in life. And it is these strengths that will help you to follow all of your dreams and to find happiness in your life.
