3 things to remember that will help you to suffer less
Why do bad things happen to good people?
How many times have you heard this before? The truth is, bad things happen to everybody, but to suffer is to exist.
Life can often be difficult. It can leave you feeling stranded, hopeless, isolated, and left in a depressed pit of misery and shame.
I spent six years of my life feeling like this: stranded, hopeless, isolated, and left in a depressed pit of misery and shame. Those six years were by far the worst six years of my life, and there were many times where I truly didn’t know if I would make it out alive. I went from being relatively happy and healthy, to having to battle against depression and an eating disorder. From never being home because I was always with friends, to never leaving my room and having no friends to hang out with. From being excited for the future to not being able to lift my head and look ahead.
If you don’t know what it is like to feel this emotions, we then consider yourself lucky. I wouldn’t wish them against anybody because I know what it’s like to live with them. For six years these emotions made me hate every bit of life.
But maybe you do know. Maybe you know exactly what I’m talking about and feel these emotions on a daily basis. The dark days of depression that take away all of the joy and happiness in life. Not being able to go out to a restaurant and enjoy a meal with your family or friends because you don’t want to have to workout until you get sick. Maybe you can’t workout because the temple that is your body hurts too badly to move. Maybe you just need a friend but can’t seem to find that one person that can resonate with you.
If this is you, I want you to know two things. First, that person that you are looking to be able to resonate with, they are closer than you think. Second, there is always hope. Despite what you may be feeling in your life, know that all of your individual happiness and success usually lies after your greatest battles. As long as you are willing to fight those battles and never give up on the incredible person that you are, you will find that life that awaits for you on the other side.
I get it, life doesn’t always seem fair. And for some, life isn’t fair. Some have to overcome far greater battles than others. But no matter how big the battle, keep your head up, put one foot in front of the other, and never give up. It may be difficult, but you will overcome any challenge just as long as you don’t give up.
One of the best things about life is the fact that we have a say in exactly how we chose to live our lives. We can either live in fear and allow the negatives in life to consume us similar to how I lived my life for six years, or we can dig deep, find the incredibly powerful strength that already lies within us, and we can embrace every obstacle that life throws at us knowing that we are strong enough to overcome anything and everything. Sure, life may be tough, but we are tougher.
If you are struggling, here are a few things to remember:
1. Keep moving forward.
Don’t look back because you aren’t going that way. Keep your head up, look in front of you, put one foot in front of the other, and just go. You do have a say, and while it may be difficult to change, if you want something that you don’t have, then you need to do something you aren’t doing. That something, move forward.
2. Focus on the good.
Life truly is a blessing even though it may not feel like it sometimes. Focus on the good that fills your life. Focus on the air that you get to breathe in every day, the nature that surrounds you, and the people that love you. It is the good in life that will shine over any amount of darkness that you face.
3. Never lose hope.
There were many times where I didn’t know if I wanted to be alive, but what got me through these times was the hope of someday living a brighter future. Today, I am happy to say that I am living that brighter future. Because I never gave up when I felt like quitting, I am now living a better life than I could have ever imagined.
The life that you are living right now, remember that it is the only one that you are going to ever get. You are strong enough, you are worthy enough, and you are capable of achieving the life that you desire to live. Just as long as you never give up on yourself, you will find that life. Stay positive, stay hopeful, and keep moving forward no matter how long it takes. You will get there just as long as you believe.
