Are you tired of getting up every day and simply going through the motions of life? If so, do something new and do something exciting. Take control over your life, experience what it means to live life to the fullest, and make each day of your life a day to remember.
I have always been one who sticks to habits and routines. There is something comforting about them that makes it hard for me to even want to do anything new. And when I say I have always been one to stick to these habits and routines, I mean it.
Last night as I was trying to fall asleep, I kept thinking about this for some reason. I thought about my morning routine and how I wake up every morning at the same exact time, do the same exact thing, and then start my workday. I don’t see too much wrong with this as my morning routine is one that helps to set the rest of my day up for success (at least I feel it does), but the other parts of my routine are a little “worrisome” to say the least.
The Habitual Way of Life
As I started to think about the other parts of my life that are structured around habits and routines, I started to notice that it was much of my life. Don’t believe me? Let me show you what I mean.
Every day for lunch, I generally eat the same exact meal at the same exact time. I pay my credit card every week on the same day no matter where I am or what I am doing. In fact, this is for all of my bills. They all get paid on the same exact day, otherwise, my anal retentiveness kicks in and I start driving myself slightly crazy.
For some people, this may be common. Some may think it’s normal to eat the same meal at the same exact time and pay all of their bills on the same day. But I’m not done…
My exercise routine is specific. I will devote one day a week to a specific body part. If for some reason, I miss a workout, I will just skip it altogether.
I drink beverages at exactly the same time every day. During the weekdays, I will have a cup of coffee at 7 a.m., at 8 a.m., and usually at 9 a.m. Rarely does this time ever change.
Every Wednesday night I order the same Chinese dinner from the same Chinese restaurant near my house. It’s got to the point where I call in, I place my order, and they say, “We’ll see you in about 10 minutes, Michael.” Like I didn’t even tell them my name?!
Most hours of most days in my life have a specific role. In a way, I feel as though my life is a reflection of Sheldon’s from The Big Bang Theory. Really the only difference is that I don’t have my doctorate. But, I do work at a university, so there’s that.
What’s Wrong With This Lifestyle?
First and foremost, as long as you are genuinely happy with your life and enjoy life to the fullest, then there is no one right or wrong way to live. Don’t let anybody try to tell you anything different.
But as I was looking at my life, I kept asking myself: “Where’s the thrill? Where’s the spontaneity? Where’s the excitement of trying new things?”
To be honest, it hasn’t really been there. Do I try new things? I suppose I do every once in a while, but it generally takes a good amount of convincing – either from those who are trying to get me to do something new, or from that little part of my conscious that is begging to be let free.
For much of my adulthood, I have somewhat sheltered myself off from doing anything new and exciting. I mean sure, we all have our moments in which we do new and exciting things, but I for one will admit that as soon as I do, I tend to fall back into the habitual way of life. Part of me is getting bored from that and is wondering what’s all out there in the world that I am missing out on. Part of me is simply wanting change.
Do Something New and Do Something Exciting
This past weekend I decided to listen to that part of me that is wanting to be set free and finally broke free from my habits. Well, most of them… but not all.
It started on Saturday when I taught myself how to code. Again, normally I am somebody who has every second of the day mapped out (even on the weekends), but on Saturday, I sat down at 12 p.m. to do something that I thought was going to be simple, but I didn’t end up taking my eyes off of my computer screen until 12 a.m.
Some people may think that’s a boring way to spend a Saturday, but for me, there was something thrilling about it. I was fascinated with the process of learning something completely new and being able to build something as I went along. If you ask me, it was well worth the 12 hours I spent on it.
Sunday was another great day. I got up in the morning, grabbed some coffee, and went on a hike to a resort in Park City, Utah. I am a person who never really liked hiking or “boring” physical exercise, but this was unbelievable. The views and the scenery were spectacular, and it was just nice to get out soak in the beauty of the world.
To be completely fair, I never really liked hiking mainly because I never tried it. Every time my parents or friends would ask if I wanted to go on a hike, I just thought that meant a long and boring walk, so I passed every time I was offered.
I enjoyed the hike so much that I went on another one on Monday. It was a mountain that was closer to my house, but it had just as pretty of views.
Live For The Moment
Again, not everybody is going to enjoy hiking or looking out over the mountains, but that’s not the point. The point is that this was all new for me. I never used to enjoy coding, hiking, or anything that pushed me outside of my comfort zone simply because I never gave myself the chance to enjoy anything new. As soon as I did give myself the chance to try these new things, I realized that I actually enjoyed doing them. That’s what I have been missing all along.
I have been trying to plan every fine little detail of my life that I forgot how to live in the moment and how to create those spur of the moment memories. It became overly repetitive and incredibly boring to live this way. If you enjoy living life like this, please, by all means, live your life like this. But for me, I wanted something more out of life, I needed something more out of life, so now I am trying to find ways to create more spontaneity in my life.
Before You Go
We are so quick to judge a book by its cover that rarely do we ever give it a chance. Whatever it is that you want to do, just go ahead and do it. Be spontaneous, make the most out of every single day, and live for the moment.
Do something new and do something exciting in life. Are you going to make mistakes along the way? You better believe it. But that’s life! That’s part of growing as a person. If you don’t try new things, how are you ever going to be able to truly enjoy life? Do something new and do something exciting. You will never know what could have been unless you are at least willing to try.
