Control What You Can Control. Nothing More

Control what you can control. Nothing more and nothing less.

It seems like a pretty easy concept to understand, right? But yet, as easy as it is to understand, then why is it something that we all struggle with?

I’ll be the first to admit it, control is something that has always been a constant battle for me. I love having control of every event that shapes out, knowing exactly what’s going to happen and being able to predict all of the curveballs that life throws at me.

Recently, though, I have realized that having full control in life is essentially the same thing as striving for perfection: you can wish for it and want it all you want, but it will never be possible to achieve. No matter how badly you want to have full control in life, there are just somethings that will always remain out of your control.

How others treat you? Things that happen to you as a result of the actions of others? The economy? The weather? You get the point, some things are just too far out of your reach.

There is, though, one thing and one thing only that we will ever have control over in our life, and that is yourself. We may not be able to control the events that happen throughout the course of our lives, but we do have full control over how we perceive these events, how we allow these thoughts to impact our lives moving forward, and our own actions.

Control what you can control.

Too often we allow the thoughts and actions of others to consume our lives to the point where we start to limit ourselves and cripple our own potential. It’s not other people or even the actions of other people that are crippling, but rather, it’s our own reaction. It’s how we perceive events and how we allow these events to impact our lives that cause them to become crippling.

Any event that happens in our lives will only have power if we allow it to. The more that we strive to control the things that are out of our reach, the more power they will have. The more power that they have, the more crippling and destructive they will become.

Focus on you.

I know that this is something that you may not want to hear, but every emotion that you feel in life is entirely up to you. The good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly. It’s entirely up to you, and whatever emotion that you are feeling is only a direct reflection of your perception.

There are two ways to look at every situation in life. You can either allow it to cripple and destroy you, or you can appreciate it, learn from it, and move on from it. You are never going to be able to change the past, so why would you then let the past destroy your present and future? No matter what happens, you just need to keep your head up, continue to work on the things that you want to accomplish, and live your life.

Sh!t happens

Unfortunately, bad things are going to happen in life, that’s just the way that it goes. But every bad thing that happens in life, know that you have the power of perception on your side. You can either perceive certain events as a negative and let them destroy you, or you can perceive them as a learning experience and move on or a positive and help move you forward.

I know it is challenging to think of the positives during a negative time, but focus on all that you can take away from it. Focus on the learning experience, focus on how much stronger you have become, and focus on the fact that your success usually lies after your greatest obstacle. Even the worst events that happen in life have a positive aspect to them, you just need to be willing to be strong and find it.

The point

Whether you believe it or not, you have far more power over your present and future than you realize. Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right. Whether you think something is good or you think something is bad, you’re right. Your life is a direct result of your perception and your mindset.

You are never going to be able to control the lives of others or the world around you, but you will always be able to control the most powerful piece of life’s puzzle – you. Control what you can control, focus on your life, and work as hard as you can to achieve the things that you want in life. That is how you will truly turn all of your dreams into your reality.

I wanted to share this with you simply because I wish somebody would have shared it with me while I was in the midst of my struggles. I know that it isn’t easy to focus on the positives when you are feeling down, but realize that the more you focus on the negatives, the more destruction you are causing yourself. You are strong, you are powerful, you are courageous, and you are you. Live your life to the fullest, and make the most out of every opportunity that life gives you.
