Why You Need To Build Self-Discipline

Imaging wanting to achieve something, anything, but not actually taking the steps required to act on that desire. Do you think that you will ever achieve it? Do you think you will ever turn that desire into your reality? 

Well, maybe in some miraculous way you will, but the odds are definitely not in your favor. Nothing worth having in life is ever going to come easy, and nothing that ever comes easy in life is worth having. This is the exact reason for why you need to build self-discipline. If you want to achieve anything worth having, then you need to be willing to put in the effort to achieve it. 

The Common Denominator.

Take a moment and examine the lives of those who you admire the most. It could be an athlete, a teacher, your parents, even your friends, brothers, or sisters. 

Why do you admire that person as much as you do? Is it their talent that you admire the most? Is it their attitude that attracts you? Is it because of their work ethic and their willingness to never quit that motivates you? Is it because of the amount of good that they try to do for the lives of others that inspires you? 

Whatever the reason is for why you admire that individual, know that it all stems from the discipline that they have built within themselves. Getting up in the early hours of the morning to become the best athlete that they can be, staying after the bell rings to help students for free, always putting the needs of others before their own, all of these examples require discipline, and a lot of it. 

The common denominator between all successful and admirable individuals is their ability to build and maintain self-discipline. It’s their ability to envision their goals, their ability to work towards their goals, and their ability to never give up on their goals no matter how difficult the going may get. That is why those who build self-discipline within their lives are those who will eventually become successful. 

Building Self-Discipline

In order to build self-discipline, you first need to know what it is.

Self-discipline is the ability to control your feelings and overcome your weaknesses. It’s your ability to act on what you know is right despite the distractions and interruptions that you encounter. It’s your ability to overcome even the most challenging obstacles that try to stand in the way of you and your goals. 

Need me to simplify this for you? 

Self-discipline is the promise that you make yourself that you will achieve all of your goals and not stopping until you fulfill that promise. It’s taking control of the one and only life that you get to live instead of allowing life to control you. 

Ditch The Excuses

If you are currently not where you want to be in life, then you need to become more disciplined. Focus on your goals and make a promise to yourself that you will achieve these goals. And no matter what you do, above all else, never, ever give up on yourself. 

If it means waking up earlier to fit a workout in your day, then do it. If it means being the first person in the office and the last one to leave so that you can advance your career, then do it. If it means having to bite your lip and swallow your fears to start living the life of your dreams, then do it. 

You are the only person who can achieve your goals, so you need to be the one who is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve them. You can sit and ponder your fears all you want and come up with excuses for why you can’t achieve the goals that you want, but this will never lead you towards living the life that you desire.

Everything Is Already Out There

Everything that you want is already out there. All you have to do is go and get it. 

You know where to start, you know how to start, now all that’s left is actually starting. With everything that you have, start acting on your goals, because without acting on your goals and building the self-discipline required to achieve them, they will merely stay goals written down on paper.

There are going to be times where you aren’t going to want to chase your goals. Times where you would rather go out with friends or prop your feet up on the couch. If that’s what you want to do, then do it, because ultimately, you have to do what you want in life. But just know that every second that you spend doing something other than pursuing your goals is only adding to the amount of time it is going to take for you to achieve them. 

You are responsible for the life that you live. Whatever it is that you want in life, quit waiting for it and go out there and get it. Believe in yourself, stay disciplined, and follow each one of your dreams. That is the only way that you will ever make them your reality.
