DAILY BLOG #235
This isn’t going to be your normal, “The best way to spread holiday cheer is by singing loud for all to hear.” saying. Although I do love Buddy The Elf, and might even consider Elf to be my favorite movie, I am just not feeling overly enthusiastic today.
I know, I just got over one of my depression spells. It’s not necessarily that I am still feeling down, I am just not quite feeling up… if that makes any sense. Life is good and everything, but I am just in a strange mood.
As I have been trying to cheer myself up today, I keep thinking to myself, “What can I do to be more cheerful? What can I do to spread cheer to others?”
When I think of the word “cheer,” Buddy The Elf keeps coming into my head, and tells me to sing. Sorry Buddy, I am in a bit of a weird mood today, and don’t really feel like singing.
The more I kept thinking about what it is that I should do to spread cheer, the more I realized that maybe the answer is to do whatever it is that I want to do. You know, maybe I should be doing the things that make me happy, instead of assuming that there has to be a right or wrong answer.
Think of it this way. What are some of the things that you like to do when you are bored? Maybe you like to read, watch television, or maybe you like to just kick back and relax.
Now let me ask you something. Would you expect every single other person to have all of the same exact interests that you do, and do all of the same things that you do when they are bored? My guess, probably not.
The same concept applies when it comes to being positive and spreading cheer in the world. While one method of spreading positivity and cheer might work for one person, it will not always work for another.
What we should really be focusing on, are the things that make us happy as individuals. When we are happy, that is how we are really going to spread a cheerful attitude to those around us. And to be honest, happiness looks different for all of us.
Take me for example. Every morning on my drive to work, I like to listen to motivating podcasts. Well, I actually take that back. During the holiday season, I have the Christmas music blasting. Either way, I know that motivational podcasts or music will help to cheer me up, and will help to set the tone for the day.
When I start my mornings off in a happier mood, that mood will usually carry through the rest of the day. The happier I am, the more cheer that I will be able to spread to others.
But just because starting my mornings out a certain way, and listen to podcasts to help get me in a cheerful mood, does not mean that it is going to do the same for you.
We are all different. Maybe you find happiness by journaling in the morning, or visiting your favorite barista, saying hello to friends, and getting your daily dose of caffeine. It doesn’t matter how you find happiness, just as long as you know how to find it so that you can share it with others.
What I am getting at, is that there is no right or wrong way to make an impact, or to spread cheer in the world. It doesn’t matter how you do it, all that matters is that you actually do it.
We can all sit and try to think of the perfect solution, but the only way to actually spread cheer is by acting. Acting on what we think is best to help those around us. Start by doing what it is that makes you happy and cheerful, and then spread that happiness and cheer in your life to the world around you. Know that your way is always better that no way.
