“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” – Sir Winston Churchill
Do you look at life in an optimistic way? Are you somebody who always has a smile on their face and cherishes life for all of its beauty?
Perhaps you know somebody like this – somebody who is full of optimism. Somebody who makes the most out of every obstacle that life presents to them no matter how challenging the obstacles might be. Somebody who always looks for the good in life even in the midst of pain and heartache.
Whether or not you are an optimist or simply know somebody who is, I think that we can all agree on the fact that optimists live a more positive and less stressed filled life than the rest of society. And rightfully so. When one focuses on the good, it only makes sense that they attract more of it.
The difference between living a good life and living a bad life is our view on life itself. We are either optimists, or we are pessimists. If you want to live a better life, one in which you currently aren’t living, then you should start by shifting your attention towards being more optimistic.
5 Benefits of Being Optimistic
1. Optimists Have An Improved Attitude
Imagine being able to wake up with a smile on your face. Imagine being able to walk around everywhere you go and see all of the beauty in life that surrounds you instead of seeing all of the bad. Well… welcome to the life of an optimist.
Optimists have an improved attitude on life, therefore, they attract more good in life than a pessimist. It’s not that they have any special abilities that differentiate them from anybody else. But rather, they have the power of perception. They perceive life in a happier and more positive manner, and therefore, they tend to live a happier and more positive life.
2. Optimists Achieve More
Because of their happiness and their ability to see the good in every challenge that they endure, optimists tend to be more successful. Not only is their mood increased, but so too is their self-confidence. They believe in themselves and embrace challenges knowing that they have the strength to overcome it.
Ask an optimist what the word impossible means, and they will tell you that it means “I’m Possible.” There is very little in life that an optimist doesn’t believe they can achieve.
Optimists still endure pain and struggle in life, but instead of allowing the pain and struggle to hinder their abilities, they look for the positives in every difficulty that they face. They look for ways to learn, for ways to grow, and for ways to become a stronger individual than they were. Because of this, it’s incredibly difficult to stop an optimist from achieving their goals.
3. Optimists Don’t Fear Failure
Failure – something that most try to shy away from. But not optimists. Optimists aren’t afraid of failing. In fact, mosts optimists strive to fail.
There are two major benefits to failing:
- Failing means that one actually believes in themselves enough to try. To achieve anything in life, we all need to be at least willing to try.
- Failure requires us to learn and grow from their mistakes. When we learn from our mistakes, we become smarter and stronger.
Failure is a part of the process of achieving greatness. Without taking risks on yourself and learning from your mistakes, you are never going to grow from who you are into who you want to be. Optimists realize that, and they let nothing stop them.
4. Optimists Are Happier and Healthier
Did you know that optimists tend to live longer? It’s hard to believe that a simple shift in one’s mindset can help to increase their life expectancy, but it’s true. According to The Greater Good Science Center at the University of California Berkeley, happy individuals can expect to live as long as 7-10 years longer than their counterparts.
Studies also show that positive and optimistic individuals are less depressed, have less anxiety, have a decreased risk of heart disease, and are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors such as exercising, smart eating choices, and good sleep.
5. Optimists Enjoy More of the Little Things
Who doesn’t want to enjoy more of the little things in life? Too often we think that we need loads of money, a fancy house, or the latest and greatest gadget in order to be happy.
The truth is, all of these things only bring “fake” happiness; happiness that will only last for a short amount of time.
The real key to happiness is to be grateful, to be able to wake up and be thankful to be alive, to realize that every passing moment is one that you are never going to get back, to realize that the life you are living is a blessing, and to have the willingness to make the most out of the one life that you get to live.
Optimists don’t need the latest and greatest material gifts in order to be happy because they are already living the greatest gift – the gift of life.
Optimism Is A Choice
Being optimistic is a choice that we all have the ability to make. While life isn’t always going to be easy, you have to understand that it’s not going to benefit you in any way whatsoever to allow your emotions to get the best of you.
If you want to create a difference in the world, then choose to be optimistic. It is a choice that requires strength, and one that many aren’t willing to make.
