How you can make a difference.
Have you ever wondered what you can do to make a difference in the lives of others? Have you ever wondered what you can do to create a life of happiness and positivity for not only yourself, but for those around you as well? Well, realization struck me today. You make a difference by being the difference.
This morning started out as any morning. I woke up, went to the gym, then made a quick pit stop at my local gas station to get my daily dose of caffeine.
As I walked up to the counter to pay for my drinks, the gentleman behind the register looked at me, and said, “You good.”
Not knowing what he meant by that, I set my drinks down on the counter, pulled out my Amex, and smiled. There was a long, awkward pause.
I looked down at the credit card machine, and nothing was coming up on the screen. I asked him if it was cash only. With a half smile on his face, he looked at me, and said once again, “You good. I got you.”
Immediately, I said thank you, and put my card back in my wallet. As I was doing so, I realized that I happened to have a five-dollar bill that was somewhat out of place in my wallet. Yeah, my OCD was not liking that at all. Whenever I carry cash, all of the bills have to be facing up, right side up, and organized in numerical order. I know, I am weird.
So I took the fact that I had a five-dollar bill out of place as an opportunity to put it to good use. I asked the gentleman if they could accept tips. But before he could respond, I laid that five-dollar bill on the counter, and walked out. As I looked back, he placed the bill in his pocket with a smile on his face.
I realize that I probably gave him twice the amount that the drinks cost, buI was just fine with that. It was more about the fact that someone, who I had never even met before, was doing something nice for me. Somebody who completely made my morning without even knowing it.
It is people like that, that make the world a better place. People that are willing to go out of their way, even if it is a small gesture, to make an impact in someone’s day. The more that we reward these people, even with a simple thank you, the more positivity that we are spreading in the world.
Am I perfect? Well, I think I have answered that enough times. But I have no intentions of striving for perfection, because I never will be. But I do want to make a positive impact in the world. The way I see it, we all have the opportunity to do so. We all have the ability to make a difference by being the difference.
I don’t know if that measly five-dollar bill could not have been to better use. Well, maybe donated to a charity, but this felt good as well. Because if this gentleman is willing to go out of his way for someone who he had never met before, imagine what he is willing to do for others. Imagine what he is willing to do for someone who is truly struggling.
All I can say, is pay it forward. It doesn’t have to be money, and it doesn’t have to be gifts. It can be something as easy as holding the door open for someone, or even something as simple as a sincere “Thank you.” Just show others how grateful you are for any kind act.
The more kindness that we show to individuals, the more kindness those individuals show to others. It is simply a chain effect that will make a world of difference.
So the next time you question yourself, know that you will make a difference by being the difference. Lead by example, work hard for your beliefs, and show others what it means to be a good person.
