Appreciate the Present Moment
“Pick the day. Enjoy it – to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come… The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present, and I don’t want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future.” -Audrey Hepburn
That was a little difficult for me. If you are wondering what I am talking about, I am talking about yesterday’s post Nothing Will Ever Be Perfect In Life. Midway through writing, I had to stop and think for a moment. It was difficult for me to swallow every ounce of my pride and put myself on blast. But at the same time, it reinforced the belief that nothing will ever be perfect. It also made me realize that I need to appreciate the present moment more in my life.
Goal setting, social status, happiness, success, whatever it might be, we want it. We want it without always wanting to put in the work to achieve it. Don’t kid yourself. You, just like me, often times find yourself focusing on the outcome to the point where you forget to appreciate the present moment. It is nothing to be embarrassed about, we all do it. We all get caught up in wanting to achieve outcome that we forget to appreciate how far we have come.
Through writing Nothing Will Ever Be Perfect In Life, it made me realize how fixated I become on my goals. Fixated to the point where I completely forget to appreciate the moment because I am too caught up in wanting more. Through trying to heal and redefine my life, I realized that I focus too much on the outcome, and I forget to enjoy where I currently am. I forget to recognize my daily improvements, I forget to recognize that I am becoming healthier, and I forget to recognize that I am living my best life everyday. All because I am sometimes blinded by the thought of achieving my overall goals. If you ask me, recognizing progress is more meaningful than focusing on the outcome.
All of the times that we stress about the past or the future, we are simply taking away from the present. We want so badly to relive the past or live in the future, and don’t realize that we will never be able to relive the present. Don’t focus on the outcome to the point where you forget to recognize how far you have come. Learn to appreciate the effort that you have given, not what you could have done differently.
Your life is worth more than living for an unpredictable outcome. Your life is worth living in the present moment and embracing every second for the blessing that it is. Life isn’t about being the best person ever to live. Life is about being the best that you can be. Part of being the best you can be is by recognizing how far you have come, not how far you have left to go.
Plain and simple, we all need to do a better job of appreciating the present moment. All of the thoughts that you have where you are wanting to go back and change something, well you are just wasting the present. Realize that by focusing on changing the past or predicting the future, you are simply wasting the present. This second right now, you will never get to relive this second, so make the most of it.
No matter what you are doing in life or no matter what you current situations are, learn to appreciate the present moment. Don’t spoil the present by focusing on the past or the future. Live for the now, and only for the now. This moment is a once in a lifetime moment. Embrace it for the true blessing and amazing gift that it is. Love yourself for the person that you have become. Live with happiness and appreciate the present moment.
