Becoming a successful individual is something that probably isn’t going to happen overnight. Unless you find yourself holding a multi-million dollar lottery ticket, it’s probably going to take you several years in order to find the success that you are looking for. 

Not only that, but it’s also going to take a lot of hard work and dedication. 

If you look at any successful individual, you will see some similarities between them. While not all will share the same habits, it’s clear to see which habits tend to lead to success, and which habits you should consider implementing into your daily life.

1. Start to wake up earlier.

The most successful people are those who tend to get into the routine of waking up early. By starting each morning at 5 a.m. or 6 a.m., these individuals are adding hours of productive time to their day. 

If you are a night owl, just know that not all time is created equal. In the morning, you are more productive, energized, refreshed, and motivated. At night, you are generally too tired or get too distracted to achieve any sizable task. 

2. Learn to love failure. 

Successful individuals are those who love failure. Not only is failure necessary to achieve success, but most successful individuals thrive to fail. That’s because failure is inevitable, and instead of striving to be perfect, all successful individuals will instead learn from their mistakes to become all that much better. 

Take Bill Gates for example. Before starting Microsoft, his first business flopped. How about Walt Disney? Did you know that he went bankrupt before starting the Disney we all know today? 

Neither of these men allowed their failures to determine their success. They learned from their mistakes, got right back up, and kept moving forward. Hard work and dedication is what it takes to be successful.

3. Just be yourself.

Highly successful individuals are those who ignore conformity. They do not try to please everybody around them or try to adapt to the likings of every single person. Instead, they focus on what they are good at, they constantly think outside of the box, and they care more about what they think of themselves instead of what others think of them. 

It’s important to remember that nobody is you, and that is your power. If you want to stand out and achieve the success that others around you aren’t achieving, then quit trying to be just like those individuals. Instead, just be yourself. Embrace your differences and use your differences to help you find the success that you are capable of achieving. 

4. Read, read, read… and read some more. 

Tim Cook, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Oprah Winfrey are just a few of the world’s most successful individuals who also happen to be bookworms. Why is that? Because reading is knowledge, and knowledge is power. 

Reading helps to provide you with ideas, and it is also a great way to exercise your mind to think of ideas on your own. Reading is to the mind what exercise and activity are to the body. The more you do it, the healthier and stronger your brain becomes.

5. Quit fearing money.

Out of this entire list, this is probably my biggest challenge. I am a person who loves money. I love making money, I love having money, and I love saving money. The one thing I hate about money, though, is spending it. 

When you look at successful people, they don’t have any fears of money. They aren’t scared to spend it simply because they believe in themselves enough to know that they will make it back. 

It’s often said that you need to spend money in order to make money. If you look at the majority of successful individuals, you will see this to be true. Money is a way to elaborate on ideas, to build empires, and to be completely honest, it shows that you believe in yourself, which is probably one of the greatest attributes of all. 

6. Manage time efficiently.

Aside from waking up earlier to get a head start on the day, successful individuals are those who also have their days planned out. They know everything that they need to accomplish, when they need to accomplish these tasks by, and they also know to prioritize their most important tasks first. 

There are so many ways to manage time more effectively. If you don’t like the idea of carrying around a daily planner, try using the calendar app on your phone or the one in your email. There is essentially no excuse for not managing your time efficiently. We all have the same 24 hours in a day. Those who are successful just so happen to be the ones who know how to use them effectively. 

7. Spend time focusing on self-improvement.

While it’s important to be grateful for everything that you have, you, as a person, should never stop trying to improve who you are becoming. 

Nobody is or ever will be perfect. Those who are successful have recognized this, and instead of focusing on trying to achieve the impossible, they choose to focus their attention on becoming a better person today than they were yesterday. 

Think to yourself for a second – how much would you accomplish over the course of the next year if you strived to be just one percent better with each and every day? There’s no doubt that you would achieve greatness. Now it’s time to do it. Let go of perfection and focus on become a better person than you were yesterday. 

8. Surround yourself with successful individuals.

Your network determines your net worth. Successful people are those who surround themselves with other successful people. By spending time with other successful individuals, they are more motivated to pursue their goals and achieve greater levels of success. 

Did you know that you are the sum of the six people that you spend the most time with? That means if you spend time with six individuals who procrastinate, odds are you will pick up on their habits and become more of a procrastinator yourself. But if you spend the majority of your time around six successful individuals, you will pick up on their habits and will have an easier time staying motivated to achieve your own success.

9. Exercise four to six times per week.

If you think success is all in your mind, you would be wrong. Success doesn’t only take mental strength, it takes physical strength as well. 

While reading is incredibly beneficial for your mind, exercising is incredibly good for your body. Exercising gives your body the energy and stamina you need in order to achieve the success that you desire. 

Look good, feel good, perform good. Stay energized while dealing with less mental and physical fatigue by exercising four to six times per week for an average of 45 minutes to an hour. 

10. Practice gratitude and mindfulness. 

Successful people realize the correlation between success and gratitude. When you practice gratitude, you are more inclined to focus on the positives in life. When you focus on the positives in life, you tend to achieve more of the things that you are setting out to achieve. 

By practicing gratitude and mindfulness, successful individuals also have an easier time blocking out the negative emotions that a lot of other individuals may experience. They don’t listen to their doubts, their fears, or their past failures. They are grateful for everything that has happened in life because it has got them to where they are today.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to become a highly successful individual. Successful individuals are people just like you and me. The only difference is that they have endured their struggles, they have completely eliminated excuses from their lives, and they have never allowed their past to determine their future.
