Ways To Give Yourself A Break
Ready, set, go go go. That’s how life often feels, right? Waking up by a certain time, getting to work by a certain time, having dinner ready at a certain time. It is just a continuous cycle of beating ourselves into the ground. There is a saying that my mom will tell tell me whenever I would stress her out. It goes “Quit trying to cram 10 pounds of shit into a 5 pound bag.” So while it is good to be productive in life, you also need to set some boundaries. You need to find some ways to give yourself a break.
Part of my blog is about being open and honest with the world. While I focus deeply on positivity and motivation, I am far from perfect. There are still days where I am beyond annoyed with anything and everything. I mean, I still try to focus on the positives, but it isn’t always easy.
Today was one of those days for me. I was trying to cram 10 pounds of shit into a 5 pound bag while running on five hours of sleep. Being someone who loves their sleep, I spent a good amount of my day wishing I was in my bed instead of working.
On my way home from work, I had my daily conversation with my mom (yes, I do talk to my mom daily because I love her). I told her about my day, told her how stressed I was, and I told her what more I had to get done. I bet you can guess her response… “Quit trying to cram 10 pounds of shit into a 5 pound bag.”
Like always, she was right. A good amount of my stress comes from the fact that I try to be perfect for everyone else instead of being perfect for me. What I really needed to do, was to give myself a break and ease up a little. Once I started to shift my focus on me and trying to calm my mind, the stress slowly started to fade away. This, my friends, is when we are truly the most productive.
So, if you are like me and sometimes beat yourself up over dumb things in life, well… just don’t. I have thought about things that I focus on when I am stressed, and I think they can help you as well. Here are some ways to give yourself a break and ease some stress.
Treat Yourself How You Want To Be Treated
Do you remember how you were told to treat others the way that you would like to be treated? Well, the same thing goes for you. Treat yourself the way that you want others to treat you.
We all make mistakes in life. When we make mistakes, the last thing that we want is for others to criticize us and point out our mistakes. So then don’t do it to yourself. Learn from your mistakes, move on, and do not criticize yourself for taking a chance. It is part of learning in life.
Acknowledge On Your Accomplishments
The funny thing is that we have all accomplished much more in our lives than we give ourselves credit for. Whether it is graduating from school, getting a job, buying a car, or a house. I mean, these are all huge accomplishments and we spend maybe a week acknowledging them before we move onto the next desire in life.
Once we actually spend time and acknowledge our accomplishments, we will then see our true potential. We will see that we have overcome many obstacles in life and that we can do anything that we set our minds to. While it is okay to push yourself and to set high expectations, also learn to proud of what you have done. Focusing on what you have not accomplished yet is only going to cause you to feel defeated.
Set Reasonable Goals
A lot of the stress in our life comes from the fact that we are not getting what we want. We want to see success, and we want to see success fast. Instead of having one big goal, set several smaller goals. When we accomplish the smaller goals, not only is it leading us in the right direction, but we also stay motivated by seeing success.
Stop Comparing Yourself To Others
Comparison is the thief of all joy. When we compare ourselves to others, we are diminishing all of our individual attributes. We start to live life based on the beliefs of others instead of our own beliefs and desires.
Comparison does not provide us with the full picture of someone’s life. We might think that others have the best life ever, but we are only seeing a certain part of it. Plus, it is fun to show your authenticity. Being unique and showing your individual flare will get you much further in life.
Let Go Of The Idea Of Perfection
There is no such thing as perfection. Let me repeat myself, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PERFECTION. Whether or not we want to be perfect in life, we never will. So, don’t even focus on being perfect. Instead, focus on being the best you that you can be.
There is this misconception that in order to be happy and successful, we have to be perfect in our eyes and in the eyes of others. Well, this is false. Happiness and success come from being the best individuals that we can be, and believing in ourselves. So learn to let go of the idea of perfection, and just focus on being the best that you can be.
Celebrate Your Wins
Yes, it is important to have long term goals, but also set some short term goals so that you can track your progress. When we set long term goals, it can take a great length of time to achieve them. If we do not see progress, we get demotivated and disappointed.
When we set short term goals, we are able to track our progress while keeping a larger goal in mind. By tracking the progress and success that we are making, we are more likely to stay motivated towards the long term goal.
Focus On The Positive
Negativity will not do any good for you. Focusing on the negatives will only blind you from seeing your true value and potential. Look at it this way.
When we focus on the positives in life, life itself becomes more enjoyable to live. We have an easier time finding our purpose and chasing our dreams. The more positive we are and the more that we are enjoying life, the more motivation that we have to pursue our desires.
Breathe & Believe
This has to be one of my favorite quotes. “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t – you’re right” – Henry Ford. We have every opportunity to achieve anything that we want in life, all we have to do is to believe in ourselves. If we believe in ourselves and our abilities, there is nothing that can prevent us from achieving our dreams.
Now I get it, we all deal with stress. When you get stressed, just breathe. Getting worked up and focused on overwhelming tasks is going to crush you motivation and desire. Remember what you have already accomplished in life, and remember that God does not give us anything that He doesn’t think we can handle.
Life is meant to be enjoyed. Don’t get so caught up in the things that you don’t have. Rather, focus on the blessing that you do have. Find ways to give yourself a break in life, and live your life to the fullest each and every day.
