I am always trying to find new ways to improve my life. Much like everybody else, I want to be the best that I can be. I want to be stronger, I want to be wiser, I want to be better each and every day.
I want to be able to wake up in the morning with a sense of purpose and be able to lay my head down at night knowing that I achieved not only my individual goals for the day. But I also want to know that I helped to make the world a better place for more lives than just my own.
If you look at the lives of those who you look up to the most, you will see many similarities. A lot of the habits of wealthy and successful individuals are ones that you (just like I have) have tried to implement into your daily life. But just because something is common sense doesn’t mean that we all do it.
We like to think that there is a “secret” to happiness and success. While there are many things that can influence our happiness and success, one of the “secrets” that we tend to forget about is consistency.
Without consistency, nothing will last. There is no such thing as overnight success or happiness. There might be small bouts of success and happiness, but they are not sustainable unless you continue to practice these habits on a daily basis. If you truly want to create lasting change in your life and make your life better, then you need to be consistent with any change you are seeking to create.
So, aside from consistency, what can we learn from those who we admire the most? What are some of the habits of wealthy and successful individuals? Here are 8 to start.
1. Get up early.
Not all wealthy and successful individuals wake up early, but a good majority of them do. There are so many benefits to waking up early. You are less distracted, which means you have more time to focus on the things that truly matter to you. You are not being consumed by everybody else’s wants and desires. And most importantly, because you just woke up, your brain is going to be it’s sharpest.
In his book Rich Habits – The Daily Success Habits of Wealthy Individuals, Thomas C. Corley studied the habits of many millionaires. He found that nearly 50% of them woke up at least 3 hours before their workday actually began. Why? For the exact reasons mentioned above.
2. Eat a healthy diet.
Normally I am not one who is going to tell you what to put into your body, but in briefly studying the habits of wealthy and successful individuals, a lot of them put an emphasis on their nutrition eating clean, whole foods that we all know to be good for us.
Even in looking at athletes, a lot of them go on these insane eating regimens leading up to and during the season. I guess the saying is true, you really are what you eat.
I know this probably isn’t at the top of your list to do, but try implementing superfoods into your diet. Find foods that are nutrient-dense and ones that contain healthy fats. Healthy fats are actually good for not only your skin and joints, but for your brain as well.
3. Kill negative thoughts.
Negative thoughts kill our chances of success and happiness quicker than anything. If we allow negative thoughts into our minds, they are going to sit there and consume our minds.
The human brain is powerful, but it does not know the difference between what is our reality and the image of the thoughts that we think. This means that every time we allow a negative thought into our mind, our brain sees it just the same as if something bad was happening right in front of us.
This is why visualization is something that is used by the most successful individuals. When you envision the goals that you want to achieve, your brain doesn’t see them as just a thought, but as your reality. This will cause your brain to prioritize those goals, and it will help you to start working towards achieving those goals even when you might not necessarily be thinking about them.
4. Positive peer groups.
Look into the lives of some of the most wealthy and successful individuals that you can think of. Can you name anybody who surrounds themselves with anything other than what they are trying to become? Do any of them surround themselves with others who might be a negative influence? No, because who you spend time with is who you become.
When you surround yourself with wealthy and successful individuals, you start to imitate them. You imitate their habits, their attitude, their behaviors, their thought patterns, etc. That’s why it is said that you are the average of the five people who you spend the most time around.
Plus, when you surround yourself with those who have achieved more success than you have, you are more motivated to reach their level of success. Nobody wants to be in last, or to be the least successful. So when you surround yourself with those who have achieved more, you are more likely to make strides towards achieving the same – if not greater – success.
5. Follow a routine.
The majority of the wealthy and successful individuals – at least that I have researched – all seem to have a routine that they follow. Whether it’s a morning, mid-day, or evening routine, they always seem to know exactly what they are supposed to be doing at any given time of the day.
Routines can be something that all of us can implement into our lives. Once developed, routines take little energy and can really help to set your day up to be a successful one. In following a routine, you are essentially turning your mind into a planner. The only difference is that you won’t have to constantly remind yourself of the things that you need to do because you will simply be able to do them out of habit and instinct.
6. Pursue your dreams.
This is probably the most important and one of the most common habits of wealthy and successful individuals, and that is that they have the ability and desire to pursue their dreams no matter what anybody else tells them.
Think about this. How often do you allow others to tell you what you can and can’t achieve? How often do you listen to the opinions and judgments of others?
Individuals who have achieved wealth and success have done so because they pursue any and all of their dreams regardless of what others tell them they can and can’t do. They know what they are capable of achieving, and because of this belief and desire to turn this belief into their reality, they achieve it.
7. Never stop learning.
Whether it’s from reading, studying others, or just taking chances on themselves, wealthy and successful individuals never stop learning. They want to gain as much knowledge as possible. They crave it. And because they crave knowledge and never stop learning, they gain the intelligence they need to advance themselves ahead of the average person.
Reading is a great place to start learning more. The average CEO in America is reading 52 books per year. That’s one book per week. It not only helps you to gain knowledge, but it also helps you to make better decisions and gain a sense of experience through the stories and struggles of others despite having to experience it yourself.
Aside from reading, just be open to new experiences. Challenge yourself on a daily basis. Do whatever it is that you can do to grow from who you were yesterday into who it is that you want to become. Don’t be scared to make mistakes. Learn from them and grow from them.
8. Make yourself a priority.
Is it important to give back to others? Absolutely! But not before you are able to at least give back to yourself. If you can’t give your best to yourself, how do you plan on being able to give your best to others?
Wealthy and successful individuals have found morning routines to be useful for one reason, and that’s so that they can do the things that are most important to them before doing what’s important to others. They make time for themselves before making time for others because unless they are at their best, they cannot give their best.
Whether it’s by taking time to do more of the things that you enjoy doing, taking care of your body, or just doing something nice for yourself, making yourself your own number one priority is a must. In doing so, then you will be able to give your best to those around you and to the world.
None of these habits will matter unless you practice them on a consistent basis. And if you are wondering how long you need to practice these habits before becoming wealthy and successful, well, there isn’t a time limit. It’s different for everybody, so you just need to keep practicing them and developing them until you reach the wealth and success that you wish to see for yourself. To be honest, there is no guarantee that they will even work for you, but unless you are willing to try, you will never know.
Everybody has the ability to become successful. It’s not going to be easy, but if you want to achieve the wealth and success that you envision for yourself, then you need to be willing to create it for yourself. Hopefully these 8 habits will help you as they have helped me. Granted I have yet to achieve the success I desire, I am progressing each and every day towards it, and it’s only a matter of time until I achieve it.
