The simple truth of the matter is that if you want to find true happiness in your life, then you have to have clarity. Not just clarity in one area of your life, but clarity in all different areas of your life.
You need to be happy with the past that you have walked, with the present that you are living, and with the future that you are creating. Everything that we do in life is a choice, and it is the sum of these choices that will define where we are in life and the direction in which we are headed in.
During this whole pandemic, I have been waking up at 6 a.m. to go for a 4-mile run before starting my workday. While it’s not the usual 5:00 a.m. or 5:30 a.m. that I normally wake up at, I also don’t have to commute into work, so I find myself with the same amount of time on my hands in the morning.
On my run, I have been listening (actually, indulging) in GaryVee’s new smash-hit podcast Tea With GaryVee. If you haven’t started listening, let me be the first to tell you that you are missing out. There is a sense of clarity that I get in hearing the questions from all of the different callers that call in. Now, mix that with being the only soul who is out running through the mountains of Utah at 6 a.m., and that is a recipe for success.
It’s hard to explain the feeling that I get while being out on my run. It’s almost as if everything in life is in clear focus. Not only that, but there isn’t a negative thought that passes through my mind – even during a time when it’s so easy to get wrapped up in the negativity of the world.
In looking back on my life, I can now see that when I was at my lowest point in life (and when I say my lowest point, I mean depressed, always unhappy, and constantly bitter towards the world), I lacked any sort of clarity in life. During the times when I have been the happiest, most optimistic, and most successful (the feeling that I am experiencing now), everything in life is clear.
Lack of clarity isn’t just a lack of happiness. It’s also a lack of confidence, lack of success, and lack of being able to overcome the challenges in which we endure on a daily basis.
It is clarity that helps us to focus on what’s most important in your lives, that gives us a sense of direction, that gives us the motivation we need in order to pursue our goals, and that allows us to live a life of happiness and gratitude.
To simply put it, one cannot live their best life without a sense of clarity.
How Do You Find Clarity In Chaos?
Life isn’t always easy or clear for that matter. But I want to share with you some of the things that have helped me to find a sense of clarity. Here are 5 ways to find clarity in your life during chaotic times.
1. Let go of what you can’t change.
The past is the past. There is nothing that you can do to go back in time to change what has already been done, so learn to let it go and move on with your life. In order to find clarity in your life, you need to be willing to let go of what you can’t change and release yourself from any emotions of your past.
Who cares if you made stupid mistakes. We all have made them, and we are all going to continue to make them. Instead of regretting the mistakes that we have made and allowing them to consume our thoughts, why not learn from them and use our mistakes as a stepping stone towards becoming the person we want to be.
2. Take the reigns on your life.
Get clear on this – you are the only person who is in control of your life. Not your parents, not your siblings, not your friends, not your boss, not anybody. You, and only you, are in charge of your actions, of where you are in the present moment, and of the direction in which you are going in life.
As somebody who struggled to take responsibility, it wasn’t until I finally realized that I was in charge of my life that I was able to see a clear path for my future and was able to start working towards it.
No, you don’t always have control of the actions of others or what happens in the world around you, but you always have the power of perception, and that is one of the greatest powers that we possess.
3. Focus on living your life.
Regardless of what you do in life, you are always going to be judged by somebody. It’s difficult to come to terms with, but you are never going to be able to please everyone around you, so instead, worry about pleasing yourself.
Just as you are the only person who can control the direction in which your life is headed in, so too are you the only person who can control your happiness. Again, as somebody who has been down that road before, happiness doesn’t come from conforming to the beliefs and likings of others. It comes from focusing on living your life and becoming the person that you want to become.
4. Replace anger with forgiveness and compassion.
A lot of the anger that I held in life was a result of my past. I wasn’t picked on or bullied more than others, but I took it all to heart. I wanted so badly to be liked by everybody around me that when I was picked on, I would only see my weaknesses instead of my strengths.
As challenging as it may be, this is when you truly have to be the bigger and better person. Don’t become angry or resentful toward others. Learn to forgive them, show empathy, and show compassion. If somebody is going out of their way to make your life miserable, imagine how much pain they must be feeling inside. They must be feeling miserable if they are going to do everything in their power just to get a one-up on others.
When I was going through this, I held on to all of my grudges. It was hard not to. But truth be told, it just made me even more angry and depressed.
It wasn’t until I learned to forgive and to feel empathy towards those who were hurting me that the clouds in my mind started to disappear and I was able to see clearly. And while I couldn’t see the pain that they were going through at the time, it all began to reveal itself with time.
5. Think macro instead of micro.
This is one of the biggest lessons that I have taken away from Tea With GaryVee.
Life is a long-term game, but many of us are so focused on the short-term instantaneous gratification that we only act from a clouded perspective.
At 40 years old, we still have half of our lives left. At 60, we still have 20 years left. That’s a lot of time to accomplish anything.
It’s important to remember that nothing worth having in life ever comes easy, and that nothing that comes easy in life is ever worth having. As soon as you let go of the idea of building Rome in a day, you will find a sense of clarity and direction in life.
Before You Go
Times are weird and challenging for everyone right now. It is those who show their true strength that will ultimately prevail and succeed. Just as you are never going to be able to re-live the past, you are never going to be able to re-live today.
Get clear on what it is that you want, on the direction in which you see yourself heading in, and make the most out of every opportunity that life presents you with. Use these 5 tips to help you find clarity in your life just as they have done for me.
