Being positive can sometimes feel like a daunting challenge, especially when you are stuck in a negative rut. At the same time, however, it’s not always as difficult as you may think. When you are stuck in a negative rut, it can seem incredibly difficult to focus on anything that is good, but once you finally do, you will then truly see how easy it is to be more positive.
I am just coming out of a negative rut of my own. It was a good three days of not being able to think about anything positive in my life. It didn’t really help that I was simply too tired to focus on my thoughts, let alone anything positive.
Once I finally started to make a conscious effort to change my thinking, only then was I able to start focusing on more positive thoughts. As I became conscious of the thoughts that I was thinking, it was like the difference between night and day. Within the matter of a few days, I have been able to overcome my negative thoughts and have found more positive ones to replace them with.
Being positive is easier than you think! It’s just that in the heat of the moment, it can feel next to impossible. With just a few small mindset changes, you can be happier and be more positive regardless of your current situation. I want to share with you some things that have helped me, and 5 ways to be more positive in your life as well.
1. Prioritize the good in life.
It’s easy to find things to complain about. It’s easy to focus on all of the things that we don’t have instead of all of the things that we do have. It’s easy to prioritize all of the negatives in our lives instead of focusing mainly on the good. But just like we have been told throughout our entire life, don’t take the easy way out.
There truly is so much good in life – so much good that surrounds us. We just need to make a valid effort to focus on the positives instead of letting the negatives of daily life consume our every thought. Unless we actively focus on the good day in and day out, our subconscious mind will start to look for the negatives in every situation. Why? Because it’s easier to do.
2. Be grateful for what you have.
Take the time each day to write down some of the things that you are most grateful for. Whether it is sunny days, a good night spent with your family or friends, a job that you love going to, or even just the gift of life, write down some of the things that make you happy and that you are grateful for.
Research shows that expressing gratitude can increase joy, which in turn can increase gratitude. It’s a win-win situation. The more gratitude you express, the happier you will become. And the happier you become, the more gratitude you will express.
Practicing gratefulness is one of the best things that you can do to immediately shift your perspective. It’s why I recommend keeping a daily gratitude journal, and it’s why I do keep one. It’s a great way to help remind you of all of life’s blessings and will help to keep them at the forefront of your mind.
3. Smile, even when it’s hard.
There is something about smiling that helps to boost your mood as well as the mood of those around you. Whether you are angry, sad, or already happy, when you smile, part of your brain will light up and release greater amounts of dopamine, which is also known as the “feel-good” hormone. Just by smiling, you are able to “trick” your brain into thinking that it’s happy even in times of hardship and difficulty.
Aside from increasing your happiness, smiling can also help to significantly decrease stress and anxiety. It all stems back to dopamine, which helps to put you in a good mood.
So the next time you are feeling sad, depressed, stressed, or anxious, put a smile even when it’s hard and take notice of how much your mood improves. Regardless of how you were feeling before, smiling will always help to improve your overall mood.
4. Let go of the negative influences in your life.
People, habits, belongings, anything that you consume, if something does not reflect the thoughts that you want to be thinking, get rid of it. Maybe it means not watching the news, not following celebrity drama, unfollowing people on social media who are super negative or always talk about how the world is ending, and more.
We develop and become the very habits that we surround ourselves with. If we surround ourselves with negative habits, then surely we are going to develop these habits. But if we surround ourselves with positive habits and positive influences, then we are far more likely to develop these habits.
5. Believe in yourself and have faith.
This is probably the most crucial tip that will help you to be more positive. If you want to be more positive, then you need to believe in yourself and have faith in all that you are capable of achieving.
This doesn’t mean that you aren’t going to endure obstacles and difficulties in your life, because you will. This simply means that you believe in yourself enough to overcome these obstacles and that you have enough faith in yourself to where you are, at the very least, willing to give yourself a chance. Nothing good will come if you don’t give yourself a chance. If you want to be more positive, you need to give yourself a chance to be.
Life is not always easy. In fact, there are times where it is incredibly difficult to make any headway. However, it is our own perspective that ultimately determines what we do in life and the things that we accomplish.
You aren’t always going to have control of every situation, but you will always have control of your perception. Keep your head high, put one foot in front of the other, and focus on seeing the good in every situation. That’s how you are going to be more positive of a person.
