Well, we’re back where we started. Despite it being summer, most of us are finding ourselves with more free time on our hands than we know what to do with.
Quick question for you: how are you going to use this time?
Life is about growing. Life is about constantly improving on the individual you are and striving to become better each and every single day.
I am somebody who is very passionate about self-improvement and personal growth. It was just over 2 years ago when I was at an all-time low and realized that there was so much more to life than the one I was living. I discovered my passion for trying to grow into the best person that I could be while helping others grow along the way.
At that time, I was 24 and had little hope for the future. As I thought about what I wanted my life to look like in the future, I realized that I was so far off track that I would never achieve it. I was on a path of self-destruction, and from that moment on, I vowed to myself that I was going to do everything in my power to turn my life around.
Now, I am on a mission to master my life each and every single day. In every area of life and in every way possible, I am mastering my life day-by-day by using these very methods for self-improvement. Now I have made it my personal mission to help others to do the same.
5 Bulletproof Methods For Self-Improvement
So what can you do? If you find yourself stuck in a rut, how can you get out of it and turn your life around?
While the answer to that question is going to be different for everybody given the fact that everybody is at different spots in their lives, I want to share with you 5 practical methods for self-improvement that have helped me in hopes that they may be of benefit to you as well.
1. Write Down Ideas and Goals For Yourself
To get out of a rut, you have to give your life some sense of direction. Ask yourself where it is you want to be in 5 years. What are some of the things you want to accomplish? How would your life be different than the one you are living today?
From there, write down all of the ideas that flow through your mind and goals that are going to help you turn those ideas into your reality.
Every morning, I start out by writing down some of the things that I am most grateful for in life, and then I will review the goals that I have for myself. By doing this every day, it helps to keep these goals alive. It gives them precedence and engraves them into my subconscious mind so that even when I am not actively thinking about them, I am still acting in a way that is going to help me achieve them.
2. Set A Daily & Weekly Challenge
If you want to grow from who you are now into the person you want to become, then you need to be willing to do something you aren’t currently doing. As challenging as it may seem, be willing to push yourself outside of your comfort zone at least once a day. Set a challenge for yourself and make it your daily goal to complete that challenge.
If your goal is to lose weight, make it your daily goal to get up and go for a 30-minute walk. After a week of doing so, expand on the challenge in a way that is going to continue to benefit you. Add 5 minutes to your walk every week or every other week. Challenge yourself to go an extra tenth of a mile. Just do something that is going to challenge you to overcome the struggles you are experiencing.
Personally, I started doing weekly cheat days. As somebody who doesn’t have the best relationship with food, I have started challenging myself to let go for a day to really enjoy the taste of foods and fuel my body. In doing so, my goal is that I will reshape my negative emotions surrounding food.
During the week I eat relatively healthy (still try to challenge myself to have something different on a daily basis as well), but then on the weekend, I get to choose a day where I just say screw it and allow myself the freedom to enjoy life.
For somebody who has dealt with eating disorders, this is a challenge, but it’s a challenge that is going to help me achieve the goals I have for myself.
3. Do Something That Makes You Happy
If you are in a negative rut, it’s probably because you aren’t doing enough of the things you enjoy or want to be doing. That’s what the case was for me.
I will admit that one of the reasons why I felt so poorly about myself was because I was trying to be the person that everybody else wanted me to be – or the person I thought everybody wanted me to be.
The thing about pleasing others is that it will never work. No matter how hard you try, everybody is different. The more you try to tailor your life to please everybody else’s differences, the more you are going to drive yourself crazy and sabotage the amazing individual you already are.
Let me just be clear, it’s not worth it.
4. Be Kind To Yourself & Those Around You
Treat others the way you want to be treated and treat yourself the way you want others to treat you.
There is something incredible that happens when you start treating yourself and those around you with kindness – you start to feel better about yourself, your life, and the world around you. It’s almost as though kindness takes away all of the stress and negativity in life. Well, that’s because it does.
When you act with kindness, your brain releases a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is known as the “feel-good” chemical of the body. It reduces stress, it reduces anxiety, and it reduces depression. So when you act with kindness, your body is actually responding in a way that is going to continue to benefit you.
That’s why I try to go out of my way as much as possible to make somebody else smile. Whether it is giving the gas station cashier $20, asking somebody how their day was, or even holding the door open for a stranger, I try to do what I can to make others smile. When others smile, I smile, and it’s just a good habit to get in to.
5. Take Action & Change Your Life
Did you know that everybody has a million-dollar idea pass through their mind at some point in life? But yet, the reason why so few ever see that idea through is because they don’t act on it. Don’t get to the end of your life wishing you would have done more with the time you had. Make the most out of the time you have and create the life you dream of living.
The only way to get from where you are now to where you want to be is to take action. It’s not going to be easy, but nothing worth having in life is going to ever come easy, and not that comes easy in life is ever worth having.
You are the creator of your future. Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right. My best advice for you would be to choose the path you want to go on, believe in all you are capable of achieving, and pursue your dreams with every last ounce of energy you have. Only then will you ever know what you are truly capable of achieving.
