Wow… life truly does fly by in the blink of an eye.
It’s hard to think about the fact that I am now 27 years old (July 27th was my birthday). In just 3 years, I will be turning the big 3-0.
That’s a scary thought, and one that I’m not ready to think about yet.
To be honest, though, as much as I miss being a kid, I wouldn’t trade where I am today for anything. Life hasn’t always been easy, but I have learned so many valuable lessons in my 27 years of existence, and all of them have helped shape me into the person I am today.
Through all of the ups and the downs, I am right where I am supposed to be in life. I want to share with you 27 of the most valuable lessons that I have learned throughout my 27 years of life. You may agree with them, you may not, but perhaps what I find so fascinating about people are their differences, their quirks and their idiosyncrasies. Yours might be wildly different, but here are mine.
27 Life Lessons Learned In 27 Years
1. Family is everything.
I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for my family. They have been my rock through all of my ups and downs, and the life I have today is largely due to how much they have supported me over the years.
2. Life is better when you love yourself.
It took me nearly 25 years to start loving myself for who I am, but you know what they say: better late than never. Life is so much more enjoyable when you learn to love yourself for who you are as a person.
3. Just be yourself.
You are you, and that will always be your greatest strength. The more you try to please others around you, the more resentment you will feel towards yourself. No matter what anybody tells you, always be yourself. This is your life to live, so live it how you see fit.
4. Be present in the moment.
Sometimes this can be a challenge, but do your best to be present. No matter what you are doing, be as aware as you can. You can’t change the past and the future is all but certain. The only thing that’s certain is the moment you are in, so learn to enjoy it.
5. Follow your dreams.
Despite what others think, follow your dreams. It doesn’t matter how big or small, how realistic or unrealistic they may be, follow your dreams. Everybody has different dreams in life, but those who live a fulfilled and meaningful life are the ones who follow what’s most important to them.
6. Do good for others.
As much as you can, go out of your way for others. There is this indescribable feeling you get when you are able to put a smile on somebody else’s face. Not only does it make them smile and make you smile, but the likelihood of them going out and doing the same for others will only increase. It’s the trickle-down effect of kindness.
7. We are all different.
For so much of my life, I wanted to be just like others. What I failed to realize, though, is that no matter how hard I try, I will never be able to be somebody else. I am different, and I have finally started to accept that. Why would I want to be just like other people when I can be me instead? Just like I can’t be like others, nobody can be like me. Why not use that to my advantage?
8. Everybody fails.
But the only time you will ever be a failure is when you allow your struggles to stop you from moving forward.
9. Challenge yourself as much as possible.
The only way you are going to grow as an individual is if you learn to challenge yourself and push yourself outside of your comfort zone. No amount of success has ever come from one staying within their comfort zone.
10. Be willing to take chances.
Are you going to fail? Yes. But nothing in life worth having is going to come easy, and nothing that comes easy in life is worth having. The only way you are going to achieve something you haven’t yet achieved is if you are willing to take a chance on yourself.
11. Be grateful for what you have.
Whether or not you know it, you have far more than what you need in life. It might not be everything, but there are people in the world who would love to have the blessings and the opportunities that you and I have. Be grateful for that. When you are grateful, not only is life more enjoyable, but you attract more things to be grateful for.
12. The Law of Attraction works.
Speaking of attracting more things, let the Law of Attraction work for you. Envision that dream life, all that you want your life to be filled with, and go out there and achieve it. You only get what you ask for, so use the Law of Attraction to help you find that dream life of yours.
13. Always believe in yourself.
Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right. If you aren’t willing to believe in yourself, how can you expect others to believe in you? You can’t. You need to be willing to believe in yourself no matter what! That’s the only way you will ever achieve the things that are most important to you in life.
14. Knowledge is power.
Always be willing to learn. Whether it’s by reading, listening to podcasts, studying, whatever it may be, always be willing to learn. In today’s day and age, knowledge is power. The more you are willing to learn, the smarter you are going to become. The smarter you become, the better off you are going to be in life.
15. Travel as much as you can.
See the world for all of its glory. If an opportunity comes up to where you can travel and see the world, do it. The world is your oyster. Soak in all of the beauty, all of the different cultures, all of the people, and all that life has to offer. This is the only chance you have to do so.
16. Find a job you enjoy going to.
You are at work for around one-third of your life. Think about that. Why not find a job you are actually going to enjoy? If you have to spend 40 hours a week working, find a job that is not only enjoyable, but one that also aligns with your values.
17. Don’t let money control your life.
Coming from somebody who is incredibly frugal with their money, I also encourage you to not let money control you. Yes, it’s smart to be on top of your finances and to live debt-free, but don’t allow yourself to get to the point where life is absolutely zero fun just because you want to save an extra penny. Find a balance that allows you to be smart with your money and still enjoy life.
18. Nourish your body.
Food is fuel. From somebody who has battled an eating disorder, I will admit that starting to count calories was the worst mistake of my life. I became obsessed, and as a result, I began to fear food. This fear has caused me to miss out on many experiences. That’s why I encourage you to nourish your body properly. Your body is your temple and you know it best. Treat it and nourish it properly.
19. Develop a growth mindset.
Life is one big lesson. No matter what happens moving forward or what has happened in the past, focus on how you can become a better person each and every single day. Growth-minded people are the ones who truly succeed in life, and that’s because they are constantly looking for ways to grow from who they are into the individuals they want to become.
20. Express your emotions.
You’re human, and part of being human is feeling different emotions. Learn to embrace these emotions and be comfortable with expressing yourself. If you have a bad day, release your emotions. The more you bottle your emotions up inside of you, the stronger they become until they eventually boil over. It doesn’t matter your age or gender, embrace your feelings and accept them for what they are.
21. Don’t let your past steal your present.
Your past may not have been ideal, but don’t let it take away from your present. Let go of what you can’t change and use today as a new day to start fresh!
22. Love others.
Despite their differences, learn to love everyone. You are different too! If you want to truly make the world a better place, learn to love others with everything you have.
23. Don’t forget to love yourself.
I say this again because it’s that important. Love yourself, respect yourself, and cherish the amazing person you are. Just as you should treat others the way you want to be treated, you should also treat yourself the way you want others to treat you. Be nice to yourself, and love yourself for all of your strengths and weaknesses.
24. Track your progress with goals.
Set goals for yourself and give your life a sense of direction. Sit down and envision where you see yourself in 5 years, in 10 years, even in 20 years. Create goals that are going to help you get closer to that vision you have for your life and never stop pursuing them until you reach them.
25. Invest in yourself and in your future.
Sure, you only live once, but you don’t want to get to the age of retirement and not be able to enjoy the life you have left. You should enjoy every single day of your life, but invest in your future while you still have the strength and energy. Be smart with your finances, plan ahead, and also reward yourself in the now.
26. Surround yourself with those who bring out the best in you.
You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time around, so make sure you spend your time around those who are going to bring out the best in you. Surround yourself with people who love you, people who push you to become your best self, and people who are going to help you turn into the best possible version of yourself.
27. Strive to create a legacy you are proud of.
How are people going to remember you when you die? Are they going to remember you for being the type of person who did good for others, or are they going to remember you for being mean-spirited? Don’t let it be the second option. Think before you act. Think about how your actions today may impact your image in the future.
Before You Go
Life is one big learning lesson. Never stop learning and never stop living your life. You never know how much time you have left on this planet, so make the most out of each and every single day and never stop striving to live the life you deserve to have.
