Do you feel as though your life is a mess right now?
With all of the uncertainty and challenges we are facing as a society, just know that you aren’t alone. I think everybody feels this way – at least to some extent.
It isn’t fun to deal with change, especially with the enormous changes we have had to endure over the course of just a few months. But the world is going to happen regardless of whether or not we like, or agree with it.
It’s easy to allow your negative emotions and thoughts to steal your energy and motivation. When this happens, it’s even easier to fall into a dark and depressive state of mind.
Before I started on my own personal development journey, I felt as though my life was one big mess. It was difficult to wake up in a positive mood. It was even more difficult to find the energy just to make it through the day.
So I get it, really, I do. If your life is a mess right now, just know that I have been there before.
That’s why I want to share with you some of the tips that have helped me to find some level of success in my life.
No, I haven’t achieved all of my goals and dreams yet, but the person I am today compared to who I was is like the difference between night and day. In a good way of course.

Here are 15 ways to find success when your life is a mess.
15 Ways to Find Success When Your Life Is A Mess
1. Wake up earlier.
I know, I know. You have heard this before, but that’s because it’s important. If you can wake up just a little bit earlier in the day, it gives you more time to prioritize what’s meaningful in your life instead of immediately being consumed and sucked into the chaos that is everybody else’s life. Even if it’s 30 minutes, one hour, or two hours, wake up just a little bit earlier. It will make a difference.
2. Start your day with affirmations.
The first thoughts of the day are the most important thoughts of the day. These are the thoughts that are going to stick to the front of your mind as you go through the day. If they are positive thoughts, you will find it more difficult to be consumed by negativity. If they are negative thoughts, it will be easier to lose sight of what matters and allow your negative emotions to get the best of you. Needless to say, make them positive.
3. Start your day off with a victory.
Do yourself a favor and make your bed. It may seem foolish, but even achieving a small task such as making your bed will help to put your mind into a “winning” mindset first thing in the morning. You started your day off with a victory, and in doing so, it will help to give you some confidence as you start your day.
4. Plan out your day.
This one is huge just because of the fact that the average person thinks more than 50,000 different thoughts per day. There is no way you are going to be able to remember all of these. As you go about your day, your mind is only going to become more tired and exhausted from all of the thoughts that it thinks. So do yourself and your mind a favor and write down your plans for the day so that you don’t forget them.
5. Create a morning routine.
This piggybacks off of the last point, but create a morning routine that is going to prioritize your wants and needs. Do the things that matter the most to you early on in the day so that you actually get them done before making everybody else’s wants and desires your main priority. Plus, a morning routine is going to be easy to follow once you get in the hang of it and can actually help to boost your confidence and creativity.
6. Let go of your mistakes.
While we are all perfect in our own unique ways, there is always going to be room for improvement. Your goal in life shouldn’t be to go through it making no mistakes. Your goal in life should be to make mistakes and learn from your mistakes so that you can become the best version of yourself that you can possibly be. If you want to grow in life, you need to be willing to give yourself the chance to grow, and that is only going to happen when you learn to take risks and let go of your mistakes.
7. Practice self-love.
You are you and that will always be your greatest strength. Now, you might not think you are as good as others, and at some things, you very well may not be. But there are also going to be traits and characteristics that you have that others desperately want. The point is to find what makes you different, use your differences to your advantage, and love yourself for the amazing person you already are no matter how different you might be.
8. Write down your thoughts.
Writing down your thoughts will help you to clear your mind. If you want to find success, then you need to be at your best. If your life is a mess, then you need to release those thoughts. Either way, journaling is going to be beneficial for you. It doesn’t make any sense to bottle up your emotions until they boil over. Good or bad thoughts, get them out of your head and release them. Doing so is the only way you are ever going to be fully present in life.
9. Create positive habits.
We all have bad habits that we aren’t necessarily proud of. The key to finding success in life isn’t to immediately break these bad habits. That would be impossible. The key to finding success is to break your bad habits one-by-one and replacing them with habits that reflect the person you are becoming.
10. Make healthier choices.
We are reflective of what we consume – both physical and emotional. If you consume unhealthy foods and don’t exercise regularly, you are going to feel down on yourself. If you consume negative media and emotional turmoil from others, you are going to feel down on yourself. The best way to prevent this is to make healthier choices in all areas of your life so that you feel healthier, stronger, and more confident in the amazing person you are.
11. Change your identity.
I learned this one from James Clear’s Atomic Habits, but if you want to change who you are as a person, you need to change how you think about yourself. Example: if you are someone who is trying to quit cigarettes and someone offers you one, don’t say “No thanks, I am trying to quit smoking.” Instead, say “No thanks, I don’t smoke.” Just that little difference in saying who you aren’t instead of what you’re trying to accomplish can help to strengthen your mindset.
12. Practice meditation.
If you haven’t tried meditation quite yet, let me tell you something, you are missing out. Meditation is a great way to clear your mind, find stillness within your life, and overall, it just helps you to feel better both about your life and the circumstances you are experiencing. Even if it’s just 5 to 10 minutes per day, find some quiet time to become one with your thoughts.
13. Make it a habit to acknowledge your achievements.
Regardless of how you do it, take some time and recognize all that you have already achieved. Whether or not you know it, you have achieved so much over the course of your life. It’s how you have gotten to where you are today. Take some time to recognize every accomplishment you have achieved and be proud that you have done so. It’s going to give you a boost of motivation and will help to increase the confidence you have in yourself.
14. Think long-term.
Very rarely will any substantial amount of change happen instantaneously. Think about the odds of winning the lottery – those are the same odds of any instantaneous change. Change is a process, so don’t try to change your life overnight. Set realistic goals instead of setting yourself up for failure. Think about where you want to be in a year. If you can be 1% better each and every single day, you will be 37% better over the course of just one year. That’s HUGE! So focus on that instead of overnight gratification.
15. Let go of what can’t be changed.
Whether it’s past mistakes or the opinions of others, learn to let go. Your past will never define your present and your future unless you allow it to. As hard as it may be, let go of your past, focus on what’s ahead of you, and make the most of your day and life ahead. As Mary Engelbreit once said: “Don’t look back – you’re not going that way.”
Before You Go
I really hope these tips help you in life as much as they have helped me. Remember, it isn’t about immediate changes. It’s about progressive changes that will last a lifetime.
If you ever feel yourself slipping backwards, brush it off and move forward. Nobody is perfect and nobody expects you to ever be perfect. Just be the best that you can be, hold your head high, and always keep moving forward.
