Just be happy.
It sounds all too easy, doesn’t it? But how many times have you been told that before?
Happiness is one of those things that can be challenging to talk about because we all have different ideas of what it actually looks like. Sometimes we wake up and feel happy. Other times we wake up and happy thoughts are impossible to come by. There are just so many variables that go into happiness.
We all know that one isn’t going to just wake up one day and be happy for the rest of their lives. Happiness is a practice. It’s one that we need to continue to develop and prioritize each and every day of our lives. The minute we forget to prioritize happiness and positive thoughts, that’s the moment when our minds take a turn for the worst.
Take notice of the type of people that you want to be around the most. You would much rather spend your time around those who are happy versus those who are negative, wouldn’t you? At least I hope so!
Happy people are awesome! They accomplish more. They dream and have life-fulfilling visions for themselves that give their lives purpose and meaning. Overall, they are just more pleasant and enjoyable to be around.
Many of you know my story. I was depressed for a long time, I developed several mental illnesses that almost took my life, and there were times where I simply wish they had. Happiness wasn’t exactly top of priority for me, although it probably should have been.
I wanted to be happier, but I didn’t want to work for my happiness. I wanted it to just come to me. But it never did. It wasn’t until I started making choices and decisions to reflect the type of person that I wanted to become until I started to find that life I was looking for.
That’s why I am passionate about helping you to find happiness in your life. I know all too well what it is like to hate every aspect of life around you. I know what it’s like to wonder if you are better off gone. To answer that thought, it’s always going to be no – you are not better off gone, and I want to help you eliminate that thought from your mind just as I have.
So what can you do to be like those whose attitude you envy the most? I want to share some tips that I have found helpful to my life that I’m sure you will be able to apply to yours! Forming these habits made me not only happier but more successful too!
Here are 10 things you can today to be happier.
10 things you can today to be happier
1. Set goals for yourself.
Give your life meaning and purpose by setting goals for yourself. When you fail to set goals for yourself, you are failing to give your life direction.
If you want to create a better life for yourself, then you need to create a different direction for your life than the one you are currently going in. It’s not hard to do either. Take five minutes out of your morning to think about some of your goals and write them down. Make sure that they are going to help you grow from the person you were yesterday into the person you want to be today.
It is when we don’t have goals and when we don’t have a vision for how we want our futures to look that it gets to be very dark and depressing in the present moment. So do yourself a favor and set aside a few minutes in the morning to establish what that vision looks like for you.
2. Create healthy relationships.
Who you spend your time with matters. You are the average of the five people who you spend the most time with. This means that if you spend your time with five individuals who are constantly negative, there is a good chance that you will become the sixth. But if you spend the majority of your time around five positive and uplifting individuals, there is a good chance that you will become the sixth.
Set boundaries for the relationships in your life and know when to move past them. If somebody is holding you back and dragging you down, don’t be afraid to cut that relationship off. You owe it to yourself to do what’s best for you, and that means spending time with those who are going to bring out the best in you.
3. Look for the good, even during the bad.
Things aren’t always going to go as we want them to go. That’s why it’s important to maintain a positive attitude even when things go wrong. You can’t always control the outcome, but you can always control your perception.
Individuals who are happy still face obstacles on a daily basis. But instead of viewing these obstacles as roadblocks that are only going to prevent them, they see these obstacles as opportunities to grow and to better themselves as individuals.
Focus on the positives that you can take away from every experience. Focus on what you can learn and how you can better yourself as a person.
4. Take responsibility for your life.
If you want to find happiness in your life, then you need to take responsibility for where you are at. Your life is yours, and only yours to live. You are where you are as a result of allowing yourself to be there.
If you want to become happier, then it is up to you to take responsibility for your life and to focus on your individual happiness. You need to commit to yourself that you are going to do whatever it takes to start living the life that you desire. Nobody else can achieve your happiness for you. You need to do it for yourself!
5. Give back to those around you.
There is something about giving back to those around you that will help to spark a sense of happiness inside of you. Research shows that those who volunteer and give back are linked to a reduced risk of depression, a higher amount of overall satisfaction for life, and reduced mental distress.
Whether it is donating your time, donating your money, or donating old clothes, take some time out of your day to give back. Just in knowing that you are helping to positively impact the world will help you to find a sense of happiness.
6. Be grateful and express gratitude.
This is such a simple strategy, but one that I have found to be incredibly beneficial. Being grateful and expressing gratitude is one of the best and easiest things that you can do to increase your happiness.
There are many ways to do this. You can keep a journal and write down five things you are most grateful for on a daily basis, go out of your way to show your gratitude and appreciation to others, or even just talk about the things that you are most grateful for with those you love.
When you start your day by reflecting on what you are most grateful for, you are more likely to carry that attitude with you throughout the course of the day. It will be a lot more difficult for the negatives in life to impact you.
7. Focus on being healthier.
A healthy mind is a healthy life. So too is a healthy body. If you do not feel comfortable in your own skin, it is going to be a lot more difficult to find happiness in your life.
Your body is your temple. Get out, move your body, take care of your body, and make your body one of your number one priorities. You don’t need a lot of exercise to brighten your mood either. Just exercising for 20 minutes or so will be plenty.
When you work out, your body releases dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. All of these are bodily chemicals that can contribute to happiness, or if you lack them, your unhappiness. As a bonus, you will also feel fitter and look more fit as well. Your confidence will improve and your thoughts will be more clear.
8. Take time to relax your mind.
Just as your body needs breaks to rest, so too does your mind. We live in such a fast-paced world where rest and relaxation can be hard to come by. But by not getting an adequate amount of rest, you are only hurting your chances of finding happiness in life.
Make sure that you are getting a proper amount of sleep each night and be sure to give your mind a break throughout the day. It is suggested that you get between 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep per night. Getting a good night’s sleep will help you to feel more awake throughout the day with a clearer mind.
Also, take some time to practice meditation. No, this isn’t some hippy nonsense. Meditation is all about being in the present moment. It helps to keep your mind focused, calms your nerves, and creates a sense of inner peace. It even leads to physical changes in your brain that make you happier. Lastly, meditation helps to reduce anxiety, stress, and negative emotions. I have found this to be very much true in my life.
9. Find an outlet to release your emotions.
Another great way to release yourself from your negative emotions is to find an outlet where you can express yourself. That is what writing has done for me.
Look, keeping your negative thoughts in your mind isn’t going to do you any good. Let them out, let them free, and get them out of your head. They are not doing any good being trapped and locked away. When you fail to recognize your negative thoughts and release them, you are only adding to the strength and chaos that they can cause.
Whether it is writing them down in a journal, starting a blog, writing music, or simply talking with others, release your negative thoughts. Get them off of your chest and feel the freedom that comes from doing so.
10. Do more of the things that make you happy.
This is your one life to live, so why wouldn’t you want to do more of the things that make you happy? If you want to be happier, it only makes sense to do the things that make you happy in the first place, and to do them as often as you possibly can.
Your hopes, your dreams, your goals – live your life your way. Whatever happiness looks like to you, do more of it. Life is too short the way it is. Don’t spend it doing something that isn’t going to bring value or happiness to your life. Live it to the absolute fullest.
Always remember to live your life how you want to live it. As long as you are not harming those around you, there is no one right or wrong way to live, only your way. Others aren’t always going to see eye-to-eye with you, but your life is not for them to decide what it is that you do. It’s yours, so make the most of it and live every day as if it is your last. You never know, it may just be…
